Newbie with some questions.

Hi all,

I have lusted over the 3rd gen RX-7 for quite some time and I'm in the market for a used 93-95. I have a couple of questions regarding these models and some newbie questions about the forum.

Is there a place that lists the difference between the 93, 94, and 95 models?

I hear that the engine or turbos generally need to be replaced anywhere between 60-80k miles. Is this true? And how much does this generally run?

I have read a bunch of posts on the board but have some dumb-sounding newbie questions. What is a FD? I read something about different types of engines (20 or 13B). What is this in reference to?

Is there a page that could help me get caught up with the lingo? TIA

Cheers,
Moppet52

ok...well for starters there is not much difference btw the 93-95 model. In 94 they cleaned up some problems that the 93s were having (nothing big but still some problems). There is the touring model which has a softer suspension, single oil cooler, sun roof, fog lights, cruise, etc. Then there is the r1 and r2 models which are more race ready meaning that a lot of the weight is cut off, no sun roof, no cruise, no fog lights, but comes with a stiffer suspension, 2 oil coolers, and typically a rear spoiler. Also you ask about the FD and what it means; well FD is short for FD3S which is vehicle identification in Japan...not sure on the whole legality of it, someone help me out Furthermore, a 13b is a 2 rotor 1.3 liter engine whereas the 20b is a 3 rotor 2.0 liter engine. Most cars do not and will not have a 20b. As good as it sounds it runs about $35k for an install. The engines last different lengths depending on how they are cared for...typically a well cared for one will last around 80-100k miles. Hope this helps

Great info! Thanks for the answers.

One more for you though. What are the diff's between the R1 and R2 models? I took a look at an R1 this past weekend and have not even heard of the R2's. Are they rare?

R1 was for 93 model year only. They changed to R2 in 94 and 95 model years because of slightly different suspension. This is why you probably havent seen or heard of the R2 as there are far fewer 94 and 95 sevens in the US.
