My H-FMIC Install w/Pics

I went ahead and spent yesterday installing my FMIC. I did it a little different than most though. I bought a universal 2.5" piping kit off Ebay and I already had a FMIC that I had bought previously. It went pretty smooth except I ran out of straight couplers and needed 1 more T-Bolt clamp. Other than that the kit was great. I bought a kit from CX Racing if anyone is interested. Here are the pics.

How do you expect to get airflow through that?

or he could just pull the front of that intercooler up just a little bit get better airflow. It looks really interesting i might consider doing something like this.

The intercooler is actually mounted to the oil cooler bracket. It sits right behind the intercooler in it's stock location.

The bottom of the intercooler sits level with the bumper, so unless I slammed it to the ground it would be fine. A car doesn't have to be low to handle well.

I did some testing today. I need to readjust my boost controller, but temps actually drop in boost now! I need to get the little bugs ironed out now, but overall it is sweet. Fitment is a little tight, but I retained my PS & Battery.

1Revvin7 - This was a test setup to see if there was any merit to doing it this way. So far it seems to work just fine. I saw temps drop around 10 degrees celsius while boosting around 5lbs.

Do you plan on testing this with an amount of boost that matters? The stock TMIC handles stock boost level (around 5.5psi on S4) just fine. The stocker actually works fairly well until you exceed 10-11psi. I don't know if I like the idea of trading the stock intercooler in a 5psi application for the extra weight and piping of a setup like this, while additionally restricting airflow to the oil cooler I would think a thicker core that is only 6 inches tall with the fins facing forward would work much, much better. This seems like a wannabe v-mount setup that is 1/3 complete.

Of course I plan on running more boost. I have logged tons of runs with my Rtek and have seen just how the "TMIC handles stock boost level just fine." It doesn't! My temps would rise under any boost with the TMIC. There is zero restriction to the oil cooler, or the radiator for that matter. I am glad I actually test stuff, instead of just "thinking" something wouldn't work. Thinking outside the box FTMFW! Over the next week or so I will upload some temp test runs for all to see.

SOOO weird you just did this. Im doing the same thing except this is how my heat exchanger is. i never seen anyone do it and bam here it is. The reason for ME doing this.

-A/W IC because i don't want some big *** front mount taking up all the air that the oil cooler and radiator needs to get. and Water cooling air vs. air cooling air take your pick.

Did you get an underbody cover? Seems airflow would be better without it in this case. Nice to know your car won't heatup while waiting to go down the strip.

Any pics of the the intercooler piping around the battery?

Ok I got the last coupler on and got to do some testing this morning. My boost stayed roughly the same at ~9psi. I will have another setting for 12-14lbs too. Here is a pic of my Rtek Log showing the temps when I boost. It significantly goes down. So this seems to work great. I would recommend this setup to anyone. Everything in the engine bay is significantly cooler now too.

4th Gear Pull 60-110

Here is another pic of my Rtek log today. This was after driving on the freeway for about 40 minutes. Ambient temps were probably in the 60's. Temps went from 25C (77F) cruising, down to 22.5 (72.5) at 8lbs of boost, then slightly back up to 29.375 (84.875) at 10-11lbs dropping to ~8lbs at the end. I beat on it a bunch today and it felt like it was a cold night every time I got into boost. I am very happy with it and I can't wait to get the BNR stage 3 now.

I'd recommend not pointing the end tanks forward. You will probably get some airflow through it but the efficiency of that thing has got to be like 30% pointing down like that. Or just get a small AC fan and mount it underneath to drive the pressure (low pressure underneath the car, so you want to suck in that direction)
