My car eats Pilot Bearings

Any idea as to what might cause this? This'll be my 3rd one this month. Although the part itself don't cost a lot ($6-$12 depending from where), my friend is really gettin' tired of doin' the labor...Any ideas?

tranny input shaft is the most likely culprit. How much play is there?

Not a clue. I don't do the work, I just watch.I'll ask him about it. If there is to much play, what can be done to correct it?

Everytime I see somebody eating pilot bearings, its because they are installing them wrong, or muscling the tranny in and beating it up.... or failure to pre-lube it before putting it in.

I would think that if your input shaft play is bad enough that you are eating pilot bearings as fast as you are, you would notice it when you drove....

Installing the tranny is a tight fit in the tunnel so it's easy to ding the tip of the input shaft and the pilot bearing seal.

The trick is to tilt the engine back on the mounts by fitting a brace from the steering pump bracket to the top radiator cross brace.

Or - this way.

Are you getting clutch chatter? A bad input shaft bearing on the transmission could certainly be the culprit. Not too bad to change while your tranny is out (also replace the front and rear seal).

couple things.

the trans input shaft is the inner race for the bearing, if its chewed up, then it will eat bearings.

also the bearings do NOT come pre lubed, they need to be greased up.
