Thumbs up make your own constant engine monitor

if you have a 2nd gen you may want to do this. i found the perfect place to mount my code reader, in the clock-engine monitor cluster. if you have made a code reader using the plans here in the rx7 forum you are half way there. first remove your clock and mount the two LEDs in the last two blocks in the cluster, you will have to drill the face plate so the leds will fit. you can run the wires down through the dash behind the radio. i used a 4-cond telephone wire, i ran the wire down the right hole behind where the clock mounts. push the wire down the right side ,take your right hand and fish around for it this may take a few times. run the wire out the fire wall through the rubber boot that the accelerater cable goes through, use a coat hanger, push it through the rubber boot from the out side you are looking at it from the engine compartment, into the insine of the car. attach your wire to the hanger and GENTLY pull it through. push the spades into the approiate slots and you are done. mine has worked fine no problems. i got only one code since i put it in and it was from the o2 sensor but went away when the car warmed up. good luck. Peace ,ex...

I already have a check engine light but you could maybe make that for 86-88's

I'm about 2 months ahead of ya!
It just seemed the perfect place to mount them, practically hidden until they light up. I even used the same multicore wire you did!

Can a code reader be made for an 89-91?

If not, then how do you read a series V's codes?

If you look at the plug that is used to get the codes in the teamfc3s.org write up, you will see a signal labelled GL (Green Lamp). I am displaying this along with the DCC signals below my radio. What is displayed by GL? It acts like a mini-A/F guage off of the O2 sensor. The LED will turn off when you are running lean, it will turn on steady when you are running rich, and it will blink for closed loop (Stoich). Not as detailed as the Autometer guage, but, imho, just as useful, for the cost of 1 LED (less than a coupla dollars, if memory serves). Warning! I made the mistake of using a Green LED for GL. Only problem with that is it is hard as all get out to see during the day when the sun is out! I have no problem making out the red ones. Could be just me, of course!

Hmm...

What is it that processes the error codes and then relays them to light pulses for error codes? There should technically be a way to intercept the signal and build a circuit board to actually tell you exactly what code it is, 7 pulses, or whatever...

That plug is for Mazda's diagnostic computer to plug into, which does exactly what you say. It's covered in the FSM. The LED method is just a cheap DIY method of reading the codes, but the proper device does even more. I'm sure Mazda will sell you one if you can afford it! It probably wouldn't be impossible to make one if you were an electronics whiz.

PRAX, i'm not sure as to the voltage output on the codes when sent, but i will measure it the next time. as to making a system that will read it shouldn't be that hard, it depends on how you want the codes displayed. do you want the numbers (easiest way) or a graphic display, icon of the malfunctioning culprit or spelled out orrrr a voice telling you the same. how techinal are you, what knowledge do you have of electronics and most important how mush time and $$$$ do you want to spend. also where do you want the display unit to be mounted? if yours is like mine(88 vert) there isn't too much room to work with unless you plan to customizzze your dash . oh, i dont know if you got to see my post on the clock coo-koo it has some info on how to mount a radar detector at your rear-view mirror ,freeing up your cig-lighter . search 88 vert dome/interior light-may affect your clock. i almost layed a brick when i saw i got a 5 star rating on this. thanks to all who rated it. i don't get much time to post i travel a lot , so if it takes me a while to get back hang on i will when i return. PEACE,ex...

I can solder together almost anything

I can solder together almost anything, its just a matter of getting some boards to work with and some chips that I can load some assembler into.

It should be as simple as a few if's then's and/or/x-or and other logic math...easy enough. I just don't have the machinery or software to Jett load the chips...I can get the chips and the boards though...

I could make almost any kind of display with LEDs...thats easy. I am fairly proficient with electronics.

Time constraints might keep me from building something like that right away, but if I had the wiring diagrams and knew exactly how the mazda one worked when plugged in, it would be a synch.

(Yarrg..But I don't need a display to tell me my water pump is about to go....I can hear the bearing whine in the cold.
