Unhappy main transportation is shot... no 3rd gear or reverse (automatic)

any ideas or help, possibilities, suggestions etc

basically reverse was working erraticly for a while and first gear seemed to be slipping a bit (which i fixed before by adding lucas and all shifting was working great)

well i added more lucas (has been a year or two since last time i added)
and again it made first and second shift better

but third is still gone... it takes about 5500RPM to maintain about 40mph and get no pull till about 4K rpm at all. seems like it tries to shift at 3rd gear at about 3800 RPM or so but fails or something and then computer thinks it succeeded and doesnt try again? have to get speed almost all the way down for it to get back into 1st or 2nd gear properly

reverse also does not work at *all* anymore. doesnt matter what i do it will not get pull in reverse at all anymore.

this is my only source of transportation and i dont have any way of buying another vehicle :|

get the transmission rebuilt, or find another auto tranny at a junkyard.

how much would it cost to drop in a new transmission or rebuild it?

the car is falling apart as it is and im broke, need an entire new exhaust system
already and shipping on that would kill me

i think i got it into 3rd yesterday but not sure, even switching into 2nd it like *chunks* into it pretty harshly

im assuming its because of the heat doing something to it cause it broke around the 104 degree day

I'm not sure how much a new or rebuilt model would cost, but a used one from the junkyard is usually $75. Find the lowest mileage one and keep your fingers crossed.

I think a new or rebuilt tranny will cost over 10 times what it costs to get one at a junkyard. A friend of mine picked up a manual fairly quickly with a couple buddies to help remove, lower and carry it out. But putting it in his car by himself took a week of evenings, I think. Anything at the junkyard is a gamble, but I think you can buy replacement insurance for not too much. So if you get a dud you can start all over without paying more money.

For an exhaust leak I had in another '7, I found that wrapping it with fiberglass insulation (paper removed), then aluminum flashing, then a couple hose clamps worked extremely well. Avoid crimping the aluminum if possible. All items are available at most hardware stores. You can cut flashing with scissors.

eh. well i'm saying that i seriously doubt i have the tools or ability to drop a manual transmission into my car, so if i had to pay someone else to do it how much would that be? i mean i paid $2K for the car to begin with

as for the exhaust system... its not a leak. its not there :p my car was flooded before i bought it so like over 50% of the exhaust system has disappeared heh
and i want a brand new catalytic converter or whatever will make the car as clean as possible

but yeh the main thing is i need a vehicle that works! and am like broke

im in the raleigh area of north carolina if anyone knows anything specific

... well just to let you know my 57k mile autotranny got junked a few days ago, the thing was a peice of ****, kept gear searching. the exhaust, well look into the bonez high flow cat, i also have a cat with 57k on the clock just laying around.... about to sell it to the junk guy for like 60 dollars or more.

the thing is.. a seven cost money, and auto seven is just spending the extra thousand or so to rebuild the bitch every 10 thousand mile, the ******* transmission is made of wood or something. **** is pure garbage from my experience. it was a mistake.

A manual swap would be cheap and easy, i've pulled my transmission many times and its no picnic, but its not hell either. If your comfortable working in cars i highly recommend swapping in a 5speed, itd make the car actually fun to drive.

who your mom? LLOL JK.

but he just said he knows nothing about cars, doesnt have the tools to pull a transmission, how can we come across to assume he would be able to do this?

if you get a friend to do it for you it'd cost free,
if not taking it to a shop and getting a new/rebuilt one is all you can do if you cant go to a wrecker and take it out.

I bet a person at the wrecker would but it'd still cost you extra.
and your broke, so you need to save a few bucks or bum some money

and +1 to the manual swap.

about the exhaust, fix one thing at a time.
i think your transmission right now is the main focus as you cant reverse.

meh okay where's the *good* manual swap in info for 2nd gen?

i dont have chains or a lift or anything other than metered ratchets

maybe a screwdriver and a multimeter

couple paper towels you know

as for the transmission seems to me like it might be skipping 3rd and going straight to 4th then not getting any pull up until 5k, and doesnt realize it needs to downshift until i hit like 10mph or so just from coasting, and cant even coast effeciently in whatever gear it is either

for reverse my neighbor across the street has a uphill driveway lol.

oh btw this car has prob like 180K on it, spedometer cable broke off at like 110K :p
