Issue with Rebuild

Okay, so i have a 88 tii and i got my engine rebuilt by a professional rotary shop and i'm having issues with it. First its a full rebuild with seals gaskets and bearings. the rotors and housing are in good condition( thats what they said) i had to replace the rear housing and rotor though due to apex seal damage, also i had my irons lapped. Now the issue is the after 1200 miles the compression is still low, really low actually. On a factory mazda compression tester it shows about 6.4 front, and rear is 6.3...... which means i need a rebuild right? i babied the car, never going above 3.5rpm and never went into boost. Change my oil at first 100miles, then 500, then 1000. I'm using premix also.

I took it to the shop and they said to drive it another 1000miles or so because it could be the bearings still breaking in and stuff.... but i really don't think its going to change much. A new rebuild with all new seals is suppose to have compression around 9 right? What do you guys think????? They are good people and i really don't think they are trying to screw me, but i don't think another 1000 miles will change the compression that much.

Who rebuilt it? What did they rebuild? Where did they rebuild it? When did they rebuild it? Why did they rebuild it?

If this top secret company is reputable, they will not hesitate to make good on their rebuild.

Save all receipts, document all communication and mileage, and follow their break in specifications. After that, comp test and contact them again, knowing 100% where you stand.

If there is an issue, justifyably posting your account on the forums can add some leverage
+ lawyer if necessary.

^^ +1

Do what they say, drive it another 1000 miles or so, and if the problem persists, take it back.

Depending on apex seals used, it may take a bit for them to seal properly against the rotor housings.

Go another 1000 miles, as long as you're within warranty, which you haven't mentioned if you have.

the only reason why i don't want to mention the name of the shop is so people don't think differently about them. also, i do have a warranty on the rebuild.... i year unlimited miles, just not on apex seals.

I don't have hot start problems.... just cold.

I'd say drive it another 1000 miles and vary your driving style a little. If I were you, I'd drive it harder this time for sure, maybe not full boost or redline? but definitely a lot harder than never surpassing 3.5k rpms. My understanding of a break in procedure was not to baby it, but to drive it at varying speeds and various loads, but not neccesarily full boost or redline until you get to 1000 miles. maybe i'm wrong about that though. Did you check the compression with the engine hot and and the throttle body propped open?

Yeah +2!
After my first engine let go at 3800 miles, and was babied for the first 2500.. I ALWAYS BEAT THEM. 50 miles Break-in FTW

On a serious note, when i get 300 miles to a tank. the break-in is over. It's the tale-tell sign it wants boost.

well, i have an update on the rebuild. I took it back and they said that all the coolant seals and gaskets on the irons and the housings were shot, so they thought that it was leaking so it wasn't compressing. That didn't work, they put new gaskets and seals on and still it wasn't any good. Now they are going to put on different rotor housings. I just hope that they remember that they need to put more torque on the irons and housings since they were lapped.
