Interesting Vibration

A while back I was playing around in the FC, doing some slides in the rain. After one slide the car just felt different, I didn't hear anything break, but it just felt different. For the past couple of months I've been having a vibration that increases with speed. This week it feels like it has gotten worse to the point where I can now feel the rear end jiggle through the shifter **** when I shift. It has also made shifting less smooth, as it notches sometimes when I go into second.

I parked the car the other day, and plan to fix it before I drive it again.

Now before I parked it I thought it was either drive shaft/u-joints, or a diff mount. But as I was driving it home one night I noticed that if I take wide right hand corners the vibration goes away. I found that pretty interesting and was curious to know if anyone else has experienced that, and if that has any significance.

Been putting checking things out off because I've been sick, but I need to get it fixed. Heading outside now to jack her up and check things out. I'll be back and report what I find.

My tires are fine. I've had a slight clunking in the rear end from shifting before. Just has gotten worse now. I didn't have a whole lot time, but I checked the u-joints and they seemed fine. I will check again later tonight or tomorrow morning. I also checked the tranny mounts for the heck of it and they seemed fine too. Going to move on to the diff mounts next.

Just checked out the drive shaft again, tried to turn it with it in gear. There is almost no play in it, and the u-joints look ok. Now going to check more of the rear end. I don't have a lot of space to work on it, but a buddy of mine in the next county has car lift. I think i might take advantage of that and try to get a better look.

Have you checked the front mount on the differential? Try that for the clunking. And I had a similar problem with the vibration when a belt snapped in a rear tire...

I've got a similar problem atm with the vibration at the rear of the car between 70-80km/h... Was absolutely convinced that it was the uni joints on the drive shaft, so had them rebuilt and rebalanced. The vibration was still there, so had the driveshaft guys rebuild and rebalance it AGAIN (on warranty); still no difference.

Just a suggestion, if you think your driveshaft is in question, by far the best way to inspect it is to take it out and check the uni's by hand. (it's a bitch of a job, I know...) Mine felt pretty solid in place, but when I took the shaft out, the bearings on the joints had an unhealthy "crunch" to them.

After driving my car, one of my buddies suggsted it might be a worn diff mount causing resonance at that particular wheel speed, especially since it seemed like a fairly low frequency suggested that it was possibly the whole diff vibrating, rather than the driveshaft... I haven't noticed it get any better when I take right handers, but I've noticed that it gets worse when it gets hot. Tho I guess this thread gives me some confidence that might be the cause of the rear vibration at speed.

Got a new front diff mount now and will try to replace it in a few weeks. Will post results!

Cheers,
- TT

If you are having issues such as the noise going away in right hand turns I would check the "4 wheel steer" or the Toe bushings. I had this happen in my car, a buddy was driving around in it and commented on how much my back end jump after a small bump. Lift the back end of the car put you hands at three and ten on the wheel rear wheels and push it back and forth if it moves you have a bad toe bushings (They give out when you like to get sideways, as they were made to prevent the drift) If you put your hands at the 12 and six and there is play it is a bad wheel baring. The cluck in the back end is eather a bad tranymount, or a bad diff mount. When it becomes more then a clunk (which it may never do) then I would drop the back end to get at the diff.

same thing happened to me. grab onto your wheels one at a time and push and pull. if there is a strong wiggle it's your wheel bearing. that would explain why it stopr when you turn a certain way. bearings are inexpensive, but replacing the inner race is a pain in the butt. good luck my friend.
