Ignition coils.

Hello, i have a 1986 FC with two independent ignition coils, i just checked them with my multimeter and the resistance values between them is very different.
The leading coil is giving 8670m ohms on the center to positive lead. And the trailing coil 667k ohms, The reads about the positive and negative leads looks both good at 0,9 ohms.
The leading looks dead and the values of the trailing are not very good.
I can't find any information about this configuration on the FC because all i see is that everyone have the coil pack instead of two traditional coils, i think mazda only used these on Europe.
My coils are not oem, they're bosch units and their serial number are the same, should it be like that, or the FC uses two different coils for leading and trailing?

Thanks!

Does your car have a distributor or electronic ignition?
US 1st gen cars had distributors and coils that look like those.
I think all US 2nd gens had electronic ignitions (CAS) instead of distributors, and used coil packs

Oh yeah, I would expect your two coils to have similar resistance, but I couldn't say which is bad. Maybe try to find a euro manual and see what the specification is.

It has a distributor. Never seen a euro manual unfortunately but at least now i know that they have to be the same i think the best i can do is replace both with the same that i have.

Thanks for your response.

Google Bosch and the model number and hopefully you'll pull up some specs on the coil. I would say the the coil with 667k ohms is shot. YouTube video shows that average primary resistance ranges from 0.4 to 2 ohms, and average secondary resistance ranges from 6000 to 15000 ohms.

That's the video that i followed, i think the coil with 667k is shot and the other is giving me strange readings too because is showing 8670 Megaohms not Kiloohms. Whatever the reading are very different and if i have to replace one i preffer to have both two new.

I agree, and i would be glad to do so if i could find any more information about my coils because all i can find is that they are 14v, or about the oem ones of the car, and i will not change a part for a different one without knowing what im doing.

I would just replace both of those coils. They're pretty cheap starting out at about $15 each for a basic coil. Be aware that some of those coils require external resistor (ballast or resistor wire) and others do not. Here's an example from amazon (

After digging a lot i ended looking on the FB forums because the system looks pretty similar, they're using MSD Blaster 2 coils so i just bought them, did't knew anything about the resistors, thanks! I'll buy them too, looks pretty easy to install.

Blaster 2 coils require 0.8 ohm ballast resistor.
