New Ignition idea LS2 coils.

I'm considering using LS2 Yukon coils. Just how do I set them up? A lot of people are using them in custom setups they're supposed to be stellar. Any ideas?

Well, I Googled the coils and it led to some interesting reading:

I think we'd better get Kent to stop in and give his input...

Leading only wouldn't be hard. You could use something like a megasquirt or say a 2nd gen ECU (if you were running the full 2nd gen EFI). The transistor trick circuit would also work to fire these. Triggering the LS2 coil pack would be no different than triggering the full FC coil pack. May have to add some ballast resistor(s) to prevent overheating of the LS2 ignitor.

You would wire the leading coils so that they fired together (like DLIDFIS). The real difference between this and DLIDFIS would be that the ignitors are part of the coil pack instead of being external.

Anyway, the main thing with making these work is taking the signal from the dzzy (or a CAS) and converting it so you have 5v when coil is resting/charging and goes to ground when time to fire the coil.

You could bypass the LS2 ignitor and just fire the coils directly with a J-109, GM HEI, or probably MSD. My feeling is that you wouldn't get the full benefit of these coils this way (except for maybe the MSD).

If you wanted to run the LS2 coils on trailing too, then that is going to be much more difficult. Not worth it IMO.

That should work well. Let us know what you come up with.

anyone else have any ideas? The only problem I was thinking about was running them off the Mallory I'd have to wire them up just like 2 normal coils, so in a series voltage gets cut in half, in parrallel and amperage gets cut in half...

three things

1. the Gm coils have the ignitor IN them, so you cant run CDI

2. the GM coils run a low charge time, running the leadings together isnt as good as running each rotor serperately

3. mazda found 8-10 hp with CDI. there is an sae paper. they ran an inductive system and cdi at the same power levels, and the cdi makes more power.

the GM coils will work, price is right, but i dont think its an improvement.

Why not just run 2nd gen coils? They can easily hang with the best aftermarket coils.

I already run a FC coil. I was just tossing this out there.

I think that the energy potential of these coils (if properly configured) would be substantially greater than what can be achieved with the 2nd gen coils. The only difficult part I see is getting the signal voltage down to the proper levels so ignitors don't burn out.

I'll let you Southerners work out the details while my car hibernates. Try to have this project completed (with all bugs worked out) by Spring, then I'll install it and let you guys know how you did....
