Have the FULL cold air intake, cold air box, & cone filter will help with that.

Rotaries seem to have more low end torque on colder days, but the topend HP doesn't seem to be affected.

That sounds about right. In my opinion, rotaries seem to be affected by intake temperature more than piston engines.

i agree on that.
i have a cone filter, but i deffinally have to construct a cold air box.
i have seen the how-to's on making the cold air box, has anyone done it with sheet metal?

You think 90 with humidity is bad. Try driving your car in Arizona with almost no humidity and 100+ temps. It runs much hotter cause of no humidity. I just put a new Thermostat in and I'm running at about 200-210 now.

In that respect I am glad I live in mild Washington state.
Nothing like starting my car up on a 50 degree night. Much more power than when it is 90 degrees out.

How much power do you lose on hot *** days??

A general rule of thumb is 1% for every 10 degrees fahrentheit(sp?)

Well atleast thats the truth for piston engines

It's actually 1% hp loss for every 11 degree increase in intake air temperature. Most cars are rated at a nominal of 65 degrees, if I remember correctly.

but where is that loss relevent from? 0º? it doesnt mean anything enless theres a temp in which engines run best at.

IMHO, that's not the best way to look at it - engines are systems, and the air temperature is just one factor of the system. Suffice it to say hot = bad .

This is one area where a good front-mount intercooler makes a big difference. The stock IC is REALLY bad - you guys just don't know how hot that sucker gets, and how nice and cold a good front-mount will get the air. Makes the car run like it's cold out all the time .

On cold air intakes, IMHO the best route to take is to shield the cone off from the hot engine compartment air, and provide a duct to supply fresh air from the front of the car. Some of the more radical designs end up just being a royal pain in the butt to install and remove, and you really don't gain as much as you'd think. A basic shield will get you all you really need.

Speaking of Heat

I was driving my AE Turbo through the desert between LA and Vegas. Probably mid 90's outside. I was driving pretty hard and noticed my temp guage go to middle and just a hair above. I let off immediately and it cooled off. I know i need some real temp guages, but anyone think damage might have been done to the engine or know of something i should check because of that?

I know I can tell a huge difference in my talon or my miata. I love those cool fall/spring nights feels like an extra 15hp.. Its been in the 90's here and they both feel like someone stuck a sock in the intake @.@

Actually, it seems on days hotter than 85 deg the temp guage always stays at 1/2. This is not just my car either, I've talked to 4 or 5 other TII owners, all the same. I also talked to Greg Burns about it, he said "You run colder that 1/2 way? Huh..." in other words, 1/2=normal...any higher than that is bad. My car goes up a tiny tiny bit in extreme heat, but I don't push it when its that hot out.

In the winter, unless I'm REALLY pushing it then my temp stays at 1/4.

Michael

Sometimes on hotter days (and yes it does get hot in WI) I try to not to drive to much, and if I do I dont push her to hard. But then when I the sun goes down I take her out to play
