Question How to check diff. ratio ???

Hai
I accidently read the instruction book for my 86 N/A European GLX yesterday.

It says that the diffratio is 4.300:1 which I allway thought was only fitted to the GTU´s.
Is there any way I can check what diff is on my car, maybe a label or some numbers???

Thanks
Kim

Don't know of any tag, but if you have the cover off, count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion.
Number on ring divided by Number on pinion = ratio.

You are correct.
Almost all of the Japan FC's run the 4.3:1 rear end.
I think it's safe to assume the Euro-spec FC's are the same.
The North American FC turbos all got the 4.1:1.

OR... if you actually want to do the work...

open the rear dif

Count the number of teeth on the carrier (vertical gear) and then count the teeth on the opposite spine. Divide the larger by the smaller and you have your gear ratio.

I'm not sure of the exact teeth numer, but whatever they are, for a 4.3, one ring gear has exactly 4.3 times as many teeth as the smaller gear.

thats how they get the numbers.

or you could stick it all back together, jack the car up. turn the car on, put it in gear in idle. and look (from the side) at the drive shaft while a budy looks at the wheels. cout the number of spins at each end over a similar period of time and divide.
voila' its your final drive ratio.

Or, just mark both the DS flange and one wheel, hub, axle, flange, whatever.

Turn the driveshaft in one-rotation increments, until the mark you made on the wheel/whatever comes back to it's original position. How many exact turns the driveshaft made is your ratio. IF it turns slightly less than 4 turns, you can say that is a 3.9. Slightly more than 4 would be a 4.1. About 1/3 of a turn plus 4 would be 4.33.

No need to count teeth or open the case...the rearend ratio represents the number of times the driveshaft turns in relation to the wheel(s).

This is very easy to do on an LSD rear, but open diff's can behave oddly so it can be harder to get an accurate reading with those.
