hot to fast
Hey guys so if you dont know i just bought an 88 rx7 it didn't run for 4 years. Well i got it running tonight, now my problem is when we fired it up it smoked at first (normal) then it went away. The engine got really hot in a matter of like 2 mins. The temp gauge was reading normal. I checked the coolant at the radiator before i started and it looked normal and was full, I didn't check the upper one though. Do you think that it might have air in the line? If so what do I do? So if any of you have an idea i need this thing on the road by this coming monday so help me out if you can.

I would probably do it this way:
1. Wait for the engine to fully cool
2. Loosen (dont remove) the bleeder screw (1 in the picture) and the radiator cap (2 in the picture)
3. Start the car
4. watch for bubbles at idle (to see if coolant seal is blown)
5. add coolant until drops start coming out of bleeder screw
6. tighten bleeder screw
7. top off radiator
8. put the cap back on the radiator
9. remove top off cap (3 in picture)
10. Top off system
11.replace top off cap

yeah thats a confusing one, it was hot but the guage was normal? Rotary engines tend to put off alot more heat than a regular piston engine. So maybe that's why it "seemed" really hot. A good idea is to install an aftermarket water temp. gauge that way their's no mistaking what's going on

+1 on the 60k tuneup. That should take care of some of the stuff that could be bad. Just replace all of the small stuff and then see what happens. If its still running hot at idle its either in the cooling system or for some reason your running super lean. Which could be stopped up fuel filter causing issues, or a bad pump or pump with low voltage. Could be any number of things
