Holiday theft proofing!

So my car got attacked. Someone jammed something key shaped into the passenger door lock and now it's pretty fubar'd. Also once inside they ripped the column shroud off and from what I can tell since nothin was missing gave up cause they didn't know what to do after that far.

Sooooo I'm gonna be doing all sorts of thing to prevent theft of the car. I'd be pretty bummed if my stereo gets jacked or whatever but I am not gonna lose my car to some low life. I have the stock alarm but since they came in through the door lock it didn't set it off.
I'm gonna do the standard fuel cut and hide the switch but i also want to wire some kind of starter kill switch. It has been suggested to wire and hide a battery kill but I don't want to reset everything everytime I park.
As far as the starter kill switch I have a few ideas but wanted to get some second opinions. One idea was just to wire a switch to the signal wire so when the key is turned it won't turn over obviously. My second idea was to wire a switch into the power wire to the starter. I'm assuming i would need a pretty heavy duty switch for that. Also for the starter kill I want to mount it on the exterior, anyone got suggestions on a weather proof switch or box to put it in and a place to mount it?
I'm not interested in an aftermarket alarm cause most people ignore them when they go off so that's. It very comforting.
I'm gonna get to work on researching and sourcing parts to do all this and will keep you guys updated.

Okay. Back when I was in a city during a conference, my car got broken into (the Insight). The driver side window was broken and some cel chargers and a windshield mount was taken. The car was parked in a far off corner of the hotel's parking lot (due to the fact that it was the middle of the night and I wanted to get some sleep).

Here are some basic rules:
1. Always take the keys with you. Never leave keys in a car, not in the ignition, unattended, even for a few seconds. Never leave a spare key in the car--thieves know all the hiding places.
2. Park in a well-lit lot, preferably within view of a security camera.
3. Keep all valuables locked up and out of sight; if you can items with you, do so. Never leave things like cameras and portable GPS units in plain view.
4. If you have an expensive stereo system in the car, remove things like detachable face plates and keep them out of sight or take them with you. Instead of using the flashy speaker covers that manufacturers provide, use black generic ones.
5. Make the car as unobtrusive as possible. Unless the car is used on the track, don't put stickers on the outside of the car.
6. If you're concerned about the car being stolen, one suggestion is to add a hidden kill switch, or remove the EGI and INJ fuses in the engine bay. While alarms could deter some thieves, how well it works depends on how well it was installed. An alarm system with wires dangling and the alarm's brain haphazardly mounted near the steering column won't do you any good.

If the car is stock, you could go with a device like the Ravelco, which works as a sort of proprietary kill switch system that uses a plug and all-black wires in an armoured sheath. To enable it, you simply remove the plug and take it with you, making it impossible for a thief to start a car or hotwire it. If it's modified (like if you're running a standalone), then you could build a similar device with wire and a multi-pin plug (just be sure to document what wire goes where and the pin-out of the plug).

If the car is broken into, call the police and file a report; the insurance company will need a police report if you file a claim. If the car is stolen, make sure to provide the license plate and VIN numbers along with the make and model. Keep receipts on major work or expensive parts if you're spent more than the car is worth; it may help you recoup money lost.

If you take a thin flat piece of metal (or something else thin but rigid), slide it straight down through the window channel directly above the door handle and push it down on the door handle, the door will unlock. I can do this almost as fast as I can open the door with the key. The 2nd gen is probably the easiest car to get in without a key if you know what you are doing.

^Yep. Some have even mentioned fabricating a shield of some sort to go over that to prevent theft. I have always locked my doors and parked in well lit areas. If you park the car outside your house, put up a motion sensor flood light to deter thieves. I even have a convertible and keep the doors locked on it. Some will say that it's best to leave it unlocked because if a thief is going to break into your car, the easiest thing to do is to cut the top. That's bullshit. If you leave your doors unlocked, it just makes it EASIER for them to steal your ****. Seriously, some people just walk around grabbing door handles to see which ones are unlocked, and they SPECIFICALLY target people with convertibles because they know they have that mind set. And the first thing after the police and insurance company is going to ask is if the doors were locked.

A good way of preventing theft is a small kill switch under the carpet. You can make a circuit using a momentary push button with some maintaining contacts once the circuit is energized. Just push the button through the carpet with your foot) with the key on. Make the circuit kill power to the injectors, crooks will get frustrated trying to hotwire it and move on. They may mess up your steering column or wiring a little, but that's better than a finding your car months later all cut up.

I'll post the schematic in a little bit. All it would take is a momentary push button, a relay, and some wire.

Ive had my 240sx broken into back in 2002 during a saturday morning class @ my local community college... I had one of those Sony active-black face headunits that they made years ago that wasnt detachable but just looked blank.. I was a kid and thought it looked sweet and my Dad had got it for me.. bad move.. They also took my rear decklid that I had installed some JBL 6x9, and even ripped out the front speaker grills to get those. Even parking your car at colleges can be bad (and you pay for a dam parking permit, that should include better security).

Dont leave valuable stuff visibly inside the car, the car itself is the valuable . I think quick-grab stuff is what does it for people.

If you got an aftermarket steering wheel, get a quick release hub... try not to get the more common ball-bearing type. .Basically this should slow down a random thief, they would have to do some homework on which type of hub you have etc.. Thought I have heard of stories of cars still getting stolen without steering wheels, but that was a smart thief. Im sure this would slow down the average gangster thief.

I think one of those pedal lock systems would be good too, its not theft proof, but it will slow down the average thief.

Also varies on the car imo.. I had a benz before and I never worried about theft with it.. The cheap old sports cars like ours are just more worry-sum. I would not dream of owning a 90s honda.

I think Malls are a no-no unless you park close to the entrance. Same for movie theaters thought I will do it if I'm on a date (which is cool to use your cool car for a date, its worth it lol)

Luckily the FC community isnt as popular as those other cars, if FC specific parts get stolen from your car, it was another FC owner, and i think it wouldn't be too hard to know alot of FC owners in your area. Would be some punk kid imo

Yeah I know the basics, don't leave stuff visible, park under lights, ect, thing is I work at Walmart, my car was parked under a light poll, in the middle of the lot it happened right when the sun was setting. I was told they did such little damage that it wasn't worth reporting, broken lock and a broken piece of plastic, plus nothing was stolen.
I'm liking the ravelco idea.
I'm not going to pop my hood and pull fuses everytime I park my car. That will get old fast.
I also see no point in an aftermarket alarm as most people ignore them anyways.
Plus with the holidays and loan payments and bills they are a little to pricey for me. I'm not slapping an autozone special system in my car either.
This isn't the first time this has happened to me either, last time was in the town I live in while I was in the grocery store like 10 minutes. I live in a small town too.
My car kinda stands out cause it's got a body kit and it is def not stock.

good tip on the wheel, and I can't exactly not drive my car to those places, it's all I got lol. And I have a friend I had a sort of falling out with that drives an FC that I was suspicious of, but I found out through Facebook and his workplace that the same thing happened to him, we both live in the same town. So I'm thinking it's an FC crowd member but I don't know anyone else that lives within 45 minutes to an hour from us with an FC, as in I don't think there are any.

The quick releases with a spline can easily be defeated. This is how we unloaded our old Lemons car off the trailer.

Here's the schematic. What's great about this is that you don't have to remember to flip a "hidden" switch off after turning the car off. It automatically resets when switched power is lost, so a subsequent restart would require the button to be pushed again. Be mindful, however, that there is switched power that is lost while cranking, and one that is maintained. You definitely want to tap off the "maintained" power, otherwise the car will never start.

Also, it won't cost more than $20 in supplies, so broke college students need not worry

After i had my honda stolen i became very paranoid. I use the NRG 2.5 Quick release with the lock and Viper alarm 5901 everytime i get out of the car. If i feel like somebody's following me i'll yank the egi fuse along with the blue jumper wire, and disconnect my starter switch wire. Only when i'm drunk i take out the shift **** even though it's pointless, it helps me sleep easier.

Kill switch and removable wheel works best. IMO I've noticed every time my car gets broken into they go for the easy stuff (ipod, radio and random ****)

Get a pager alarm, those are cool, I had one in my 240 after that incident, Some even have remote starter in them.. Get a decent one on ebay and install it yourself, I think you can look at the factory alarm wiring and go from there.

The little LCD screen tells you when it goes off, and if a door was opened, or started. Probably won't get signal in a mall but when it used to reach signal to me when i used to work at this one place and when id go to class. If it goes off, just run to your car.

I became paranoid as hell when the 240sx scene blew up and zilvia.net has a section to post up stolen cars =\ .

I have my eyes on a gps tracker, removable steering wheel and a few kill switches.

My friend got his car stolen, luckily he had gps snitch, tracked the car and called the cops right infront of his house. Dude had 4 stolen cars in his backyard, looking like a chopshop...

Here's an excellent write-up with recent updates for an install of a Viper model; however, the wiring plan would apply to any alarm system. As with the others who have said it, I suggest a pager system. The Viper 5901 has nice features.

I'm liking this, saves me some money, I doubt a would be thief would have an extra in his pocket or be able to figure out how to wire around it quick enough to get away with my car, and it fits in my pocket lol, this will be coming out when I park in the big cities when I Xmas shop this year. Thanks!
Glad I started this thread before I hauled off and spent a crap ton of money.
I'm still gonna ask for a detachable hub adapter for Xmas though, I wanna extend the wheel back some.
