High MPG???

Last and first RX7 was a 90 N/A I bought new. Well maintained with no mods. Got 239,000 on original engine. She died 3 months ago with 316,000. Anyway, I consistantly got 18 city and 21 highway MPG through out her life. Was able to buy a mint 90 GXL N/A recently with no apparent mods and am consistantly getting 21 city and 26-27 Highway. Have checked both odometers and are right on against highway markers.

Other than moving to North Carolina from Michigan the only variable that has changed is the higher average ambient temperature. What's up? How come the significant difference in MPG? Have read an archived thread on MPG and most folks claim 18 - 21 is about right.

Sorry, but with a stock NA motor you should be getting mid 20's on the highway. As I modded my car I watched my mileage drop to its current point of 19mpg.

The original had oil changed every 1,500 with Prolong every 2-3 changes. Tranny and diif drained changed every 10,000. Plugs changed every 7,500 - 10,000 as well.

Plan on the same with the new one. Worked before I think.

I try to change the oil and filter every 3k miles.

I never used or will use engine addatives on any car, but what prolong product did you use ?

I have only changed the air and fuel filter and tranny oil once in my cars lifetime which now has 260k+ miles.

86 GXL with original engine/clutch/tranny

I just got a 1988 RX-7 convertible, and I checked it and got 16.7 city. No mods on this car either. I drove it like grandma to see how good it would get. Ive always had RX-7 and this gas mileage on this one is almost as bad as my street ported w/headers 80 and stock modified carb, it got around 13 - 15. It also smells really rich, or just funny. Of course Ive never owned a car with a catylitic converter anyways LOL

I have an 86 GXL...... when the car was running strong, it would average around 25 mpg on the highway. This was totally stock. Right now, I'm getting around 21 with HKS Exhaust, & K&N filtercharger.
