help.......LOTS of smoke

Here in Michigan the roads have cleared up and after 4 months of not driving the 7, I had to take her out for a spin. Well after she warmed up I took her around the block and while I was driving I looked in my rear-view and could barely see out the back.

There are huge clouds of smoke while I am driving. If I let off the gas it goes away. After a few miles it seemed to go away alittle but it was still there.

The car is a 89T2 with quite a few mods. If anyone could be of assistance that would be great. Also I had a huge puddle of oil under the car. It was under the front of the engine. Right by the sway bar. Directly in the middle.

ANY advice would be more than appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

Couple of possibilities. Either your turbo seals are completely shot, oil seals are destroyed on the rotors, or you have a massive oil leak that's dripping onto the exhaust/etc and the wind was just pulling it out the back. Though, I'd look under the hood and figure out exactly where the oils coming from. Chances are it's coming from your exhaust manifold.

I'm sure it's your internal and/or external turbo seals. I had the same problem about a month ago. Search under my name and you'll see. I just got a used turbo and new gaskets put on, and it fixed the problem.

Good luck,
Marshall

cold weather might do something with leaking oil into exhaust manifold if car is sitting outside in freezing weather.....

Thanks to everyone who replied! Here is some more info to the situation. The smoke was definitly coming from the exhaust.
As far as the oil leak goes I dont think that it is from the exhaust manifold because it looks to be coming from the front of the engine, right in the middle.

Also the smoke did seem to go away after awhile.

Thanks again,
Josh

Well I think that I found the problem....... I took it out again and the add coolant buzzer came on. I stoped and it was low so I filled it up, took off again and no more than 600 yards it happend again. so.........I am led to belive that the coolant seals are shot and I have coolant leaking into my rotors.

Also I did check the ground and the dissapering coolant isnt leaking from anything.

Any thoughts on this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

sure you had enough antifreeze during the winter? Maybe it froze a little and cracked the block or maybe just the seals

White smoke is normally due to a bad coolant seal, and with all of your symptoms it seems like that is the most logical explaination.

What Rotary>Piston meant when he asked about having enough coolant was the ratio of coolant to water. Coolant both raises the boiling point and lowers the freezing point, so your water/coolant could have frozen if you did not have the proper mixture.

Too bad the only way to fix a seal is to rebuild the motor. Good luck to you.

Damn, Josh, that sucks. Make sure your rad is full and bleed the system. Take it out again and see what happens.

I had a similar problem with white smoke a few weeks ago and it was one of my primary injectors stuck wide open. The car would idle barely and white smoke poured out. My A/F read full rich, the last possible bar on the gauge. Once the engine heated up the injector unfroze and everything was fine.

Jim- yeah it really sucks! I am doing all that I can right now so that I can make it down to Rotary Revolution!! I am thinking of getting a J-spec just so I can drive it this summer and if I blow it up......oh well!!!! But in the end it is going to be BAD ***!! I am looking at a new engine from Pettit that will be damn near built proof. But it is going to about 5k for it. I dont know how fast chris can rebuild mine, but if he can do it fairly quick I may just have him do that because my housing already have a streetport. But then I would have to do some serious driving around so that it would be broke in for Rotary Revolution.

Send me a P.M. if you would with your phone number so that I can get ahold of you because I will probably be out that way sometime soon!
