All of the TII's sold in the states had a 4.10 gear from the factory.Should be no problem on the highway. My GTUs has a 4.30 and it does just fine.

Well Dak, you covered it. GTUs had 4.30 and everything else 2nd gen was 4.10

At least that's what I've learned in my time on the forum.

You forgot about the auto's. Automatic coupes has 3.9 ratio, while the auto verts had a 4.1 ratio. Like everyone else said, all manual's had 4.1's, except the GTUs, which had 4.3.

What did the Jspec Efinis have? How hard would it be to get ahold of those? And would it be worth swapping them?

There was a special model in Japan.I'm not sure if it was the Efini model or not that had 4.3s in it.Mazdatrix,Racing Beat and Rotary Performance all sell 4.3 gearsets for both the Turbo and Non-Turbo models.I like the 4.3 in my car but that's all I know since my car came with it.Personally I would say yes but then again I've never really driven one with the 4.10 gears. If I ever get my TII project on the road I'll evetually put 4.3s in it.

Agent_D, who set up your 5.12s? What was the cost if you don't mind my asking?

Mazdatrix used to carry a conversion piece that let you use the 1st gens ring and pinion in a 2nd gen, but they discontinued it awhile back.

Would you believe gas mileage? With a real live V-8 you've got the grunt to cruise around at 1500 rpm. Our cars need revs if we're going to be able to drive them, V-8's don't. That's also what gives a new Vette a top speed of 170 or so.

Another thing you forgot to mention about the Mustangs very low final drive ratio is that the tranny ratios are actually higher than the RX7 trannies. Therefore, the final needs to be lower to get the same overall ratio. But the part abot V8's having the low end and lower redline is more important.

So what about the 5.10's? What would happen if I switch to those? Is it not feasable because of our tranny ratios?

Well if you kind find some 5.12's you could use 'em, but your Highway Gas mileage is gonna suck, and your gonna be shifting mad quick yo. But it will make your car kick *** of the line and for doing the 1/4 mile and stuff...its a tradeoff...

The problem with the 5.12 and 4.88 ring and pinions is that they need to be modified to fit. They are sourced from the early RX3s and 1st gen RX7s. The pinion snout is shorter than a 2nd gens and the pinion gear needs to be cut in half, extended, welded back together and trued. Very expensive.

The only economical options are 3.90, 4.10 and 4.30.
