I'm having the clutch replaced on my 1988 vert and the shop had the flywheel resurfaced when doing the work. Sounds pretty normal. The machine shop that resurfaced it said the ring gear is coming off the flywheel and suggested welding a few spot welds to keep it secure. I'm not sure this is something that should be done. I was looking at racing beats website and their lightened flywheel and it requires a counter weight to keep everything in balance, which got me thinking about the sensitivity of the balance of the flywheel and if welding the ring gear could screw it up. I have a stock flywheel but it got me thinking. Can't the shop just heat up the ring gear to expand the metal and reseat it correctly on the flywheel? Should I avoid having the shop do a few spot welds to ensure the ring gear stays connected to the flywheel?

Attached is a photo the shop sent showing the ring gear not seated properly on the flywheel.

 

If the ringgear is not loose, I would suspect it is seated the way it should, correct me if i'm wrong.

Comparison flywheel will prove.

That being said, the reason you need a separate counterweight on an aftermarket flywheel is because the oem flywheel has that build in.
