flywheel ring gear

Hi all,
I need to replace the ring gear on my flywheel ('85 GSL-SE). Does anyone know where I can get a replacement?

Also, does anyone have the steel flywheel from racing beat? Would you recommend replacing the whole unit with this one, since I'll have it apart?

Thanks,
Ben

I would use the RB steel flywheel over stock any day.

Flywheel

If you have the money for the rb flywheel and the counterweight, now is the time
to do it. The reduction of rotational mass is clearly felt when accelerating. rx7doctor

I dont think the gear itself is replaceable, and even if it were, good luck finding one. Youre more likely to just find a used flywheel somewhere with good teeth that just needs to be resurfaced. However, as stated, the lighter flywheel is pretty nifty

the gear is replaceable. When I wrecked my brown 85 GS, I pulled the motor out, and while it was out i figured Id change the clutch before I threw it in my new GSL-SE. Well much to my amazement the ring gear had allmost completely walked itslef off the flywheel. I had to replace the entire flywheel, due to no ring gears being available.

As for the lightened steel flywheel, a lighter flywheel is not allways a better thing. A heavier flywheel is much better for drag racing and produces much better launches.

it all depends on what your going to use the car for.

The ring gear coming off of the flywheel can be a sign that the clutch was slipping (alot). As the clutch slips it creates heat, which allows the ring gear to begin to move.

So, to re-install a ring gear and bake it at 400 degree for 20 minutes. Cool the flywheel and keep it close to the ring gear. When you pull the hot ring gear out place it on the cold flywheel and it should slide into place. When it cools it should clamp onto the flywheel, but you can tack weld it to be sure.

I thought it was all about staying in the power band, i.e. if a lighter clutch allows the mass to get up the power band faster due to less weight.

Personally, I'll probbaly be going with Racing Beat's stuff.
