Flywheel question
Flywheel question
Hey guys. I'm wondering if an 88 S4 N/A flywheel will work on an 89 N/A auto. I'm swapping the 89 to a manual using the parts from the 88. So I really need to know if the 88 flywheel will work on an 89

Yes, i do believe you'll be fine, but you'll want to keep the 89 starter due to the fact that i believe the # of teeth between s4 and s5 changed on the starters and flywheels

*dooh* forgot about the counter weights. My bad
Couple options though, you already have a s5 auto counterweight, could go for a lightweight flywheel
Or just get a s5 flywheel

That is because they didn't make an OEM lightweight flywheel.
The Flywheels had the counterweight built into the casting,so the Series of engine needs to match the Flywheel is is for..(s4 flywheel,s4 engine).
The Auto "flywheel" is called a Flexplate and needed the counterweight to balance the rotational assembly.,.so then again if you has an S5 engine you would need an S5 Counterweight.
Since the "aftermarket light flywheel" is basically a Auto Flexplate with a Clutch surface, you need the appropriate counterweight for the engine.
NOW,I don't know what transmission you have BUT you will need the N/A starter to run the Flywheel..NOT the Auto trans starter,as they have a different gear. This is on an N/A Manual Trans.
BUT if you switch UP to a TII trans you can use that Auto trans starter on the new Lightweight TII Flywheel..(notice I changed from N/A to TII when I said that.)

You need a S5 N/A # 350 flywheel weighs 21 lbs, the S4 N/A is #326 and weighs 24lbs.
Do not install the S4 flywheel on a S5 engine, the rotating assembly will be out of balance.
The N/A clutches are interchangeable.
