Flywheel question

Flywheel question

Hey guys. I'm wondering if an 88 S4 N/A flywheel will work on an 89 N/A auto. I'm swapping the 89 to a manual using the parts from the 88. So I really need to know if the 88 flywheel will work on an 89

Yes, i do believe you'll be fine, but you'll want to keep the 89 starter due to the fact that i believe the # of teeth between s4 and s5 changed on the starters and flywheels

Another smarty pants who actually knows the answer 100% will respond soon

So the 88 flywheel will work on my 89 car but I have to use the 89 starter correct?

It won't work, 88 (s4) and 89 (s5) had different counterweights on the flywheel.
You'll need an s5.

*dooh* forgot about the counter weights. My bad

Couple options though, you already have a s5 auto counterweight, could go for a lightweight flywheel

Or just get a s5 flywheel

This leads me to my next question. Will the clutch/pressure plate from the 88 work for a lightweight flywheel on the 89?

That is because they didn't make an OEM lightweight flywheel.
The Flywheels had the counterweight built into the casting,so the Series of engine needs to match the Flywheel is is for..(s4 flywheel,s4 engine).

The Auto "flywheel" is called a Flexplate and needed the counterweight to balance the rotational assembly.,.so then again if you has an S5 engine you would need an S5 Counterweight.

Since the "aftermarket light flywheel" is basically a Auto Flexplate with a Clutch surface,you need the appropriate counterweight for the engine.

NOW,I don't know what transmission you have BUT you will need the N/A starter to run the Flywheel..NOT the Auto trans starter,as they have a different gear.This is on an N/A Manual Trans.
BUT if you switch UP to a TII trans you can use that Auto trans starter on the new Lightweight TII Flywheel..(notice I changed from N/A to TII when I said that.)

my engine had a s5 flywheel, i dont know for sure if that was the case but it may have caused the front key to vibrate off the e-shaft

You need a S5 N/A # 350 flywheel weighs 21 lbs, the S4 N/A is #326 and weighs 24lbs.

Do not install the S4 flywheel on a S5 engine, the rotating assembly will be out of balance.

The N/A clutches are interchangeable.

No, the starters are identical between s4 manual and s5 manual; I don't know where iduley got that.

You can not use the Auto starter because it is the same mating flange as the TII, you can use the S4 N/A starter on the S4 N/A trans with the S5 Flywheel and S4 clutch

No one say anything about the difference in automagic starter harness and 5 speed. Im not 100% on what it was but i know there is a bit of difference in the two.

Neutral safety switch, automatic throttle body is also different.....along with numerous other parts
