Flywheel nut removal

Think I can manage to get the flywheel nut off with my Husky H4150?

600 ft-lb in reverse, I've got a 2 hp 25 gallon craftsman air compressor.

Car is a 1988 Mazda RX7 TurboII with 87,xxx miles on it, original clutch. =D

Use a torch and heat it up for a few mins.

That might do the trick. It took 4 guys and about 10 ft of pipe, a breaker bar, a pry bar, and a torch to get mine off. Sometimes they are on there pretty good.

Me, my dad, my uncle and my uncles brother in law did it.

We used a 55mm tube spanner, a pointy ended crowbar, a flat straight crowbar, and a 4 ft long trolley jack bar, as well as a few bricks.

Built the bricks up around the nut to hold the tube straight, have someone hold that square. Someone stand on the motor. Someone hold the bar into a welch plug hole stopping the counterweight from turning. And the last guy leaned on the 4ft bar. It came off after about 5 seconds.

I have since bought a 3/8" Drive 54mm impact wrench socket, and I will either get a rattle gun and compressor, or a big 3/8 drive bar, a piece of pipe and a flywheel break when it needs to be done again.

After that nut is off, the hardest bits are getting the intermediate housing over the rear lobe on the e shaft and getting the rear housing on.

I had planned on getting a 54mm 3/4" impact socket from the Snap-On man. Then using our 3/4" impact gun that we use on 18 wheeler tires. I think it's some where around 1,000 ft-lbs in reverse. That should do the trick.

The nut is only torqued to 250-300ft/lbs max. Heat it up to melt any thread locker or silcone in there and use your impact. I got mine off with a 260ft/lbs max 1/2" impact wrench. It took a little while but it got the job done. The front pulley bolt was more of a bitch on mine.

I did it with a 55mm socket that I milled myself out of hardened steel and a 3/4" impact wrench. I also milled a sideways hole in the socket so that when air tools are not available, I can do it with a big breaker bar. Which I have done twice.

Haha, yeah... Somethin like that. I don't believe you got that nut off with 260 ft/lbs of force. Not for a second. Unless you had the motor apart the day before. Maybe a impact that gets 260 max at 75 psi, connected to an air compressor running at 100 psi. If you don't know why a nut would be on tighter than it was torqued to, you shouldn't be taking off that particular nut.

I have removed them with an electric 1/2" impact driver, and the mazdatrix tool. By myself. With the mazdatrix tool, I just use a maul.

Torch wise, all I have is a crappy MAPP+Oxy torch.

Well, I'll give it a shot. Heat with torch, then impact the hell out of it.

I use the 2 1/8 socket from sears, But I have seen about 8 or 9 motor that at one point in time have had the nut chizzled off. Ive never done it, but it seems to work.

The only reason I said "only" is because he is talking about using a 600-1000ft/lbs impact. You shouldn't need anything near that much.

I'm sorry if you don't believe me but the impact I used was just a basic 1/2" impact driver, and I was by myself. I think I had the air turned up over 100psi, and it probably took nearly 5 minutes worth of hitting it before it came free. Honestly, I was surprised when it came off.

The front bolt wouldn't come free with the impact. It took me and one other person with him sitting on the engine and me pulling on a breaker bar with an extra 2 foot extention to get it off... and that was after heating the **** out of the bolt. I went flying when it did come free too!!!

I think that any impact wrench over 300 ft/lbs can work. The flywheel nut is torque between 280 and 300 ft/lbs. I used a 8ft pipe with a 1/2" wrench with the 2 1/8 socket and 6 ft L shape iron bar that I drill to holes to match two flywheel holes (for the pressure plate bolts) to remove the nut. You need to take out the oil pan to get the engine flat on the floor. Have 2 people placed over the iron bar parallel to the floor when you loosen the nut.

What I did was place a 2 x 6 over the motor mount and have people stand on the board to keep the motor from moving. Worked well.

another trick if you have an air compressor available is to use an air hammer with a flat chisel attachment. you can tap at the corners of the nut in the direction of removal. it also means you will need a new nut but if it came down to not being able to disassemble the engine or not buying a new flywheel nut, it's not that hard of a decision.

just spent 3 hours taking the nut off mine but that was with the engine in the car and only on jack stands. i tried to use my 300ft pound impact with no luck then i put a breaker bar on it with cheat bar and jacked up on the bar and it lifted the car without even budging the nut!!... finaly i heated the nut for 5 min and used the impact again and it zipped of in about 5 sec

Copied from the FAQ:

How do I remove the flywheel nut and flywheel?
The flywheel nut is torqued to approximately 350 Ft-LBs and is 54MM or 2 1/8" in size. You will need a large breaker bar or impact gun and then some means to keep the flywheel still as the nut is spun off. The flywheel can then be pulled off with a puller or pried off from behind. Took me and Bdoty to do mine with a nice breaker bar. Didn't have anywhere near 300lbs.
