One is for referance voltage from the ignition circuit, and the other is to tell systems in the car that the alternator is running.

S5 and FD (FD uses the non-turbo style connectors):

It's been a hell of a long time since cars cars with dynamos. Alternators have been standard for decades...

Nope, an alternator and a dynamo are quite different. A dynamo (aka generator) produces DC voltage; an alternator produces AC voltage (hence the name) which is then rectified to produce DC. Alternators are a lot more powerful and efficient, which is why they totally replaced dynamos in cars along time ago.

So really our cars do have dynamos but everyone just calls them alternators? Cause according to what your saying, our cars using alternators, do not use a 12v dc system???

me=confused to ****.

No, we do not have dynamos, we have alternators. They are different, just like I explained.

Why did I say anything like that? I never even mentioned voltage. Dynamos (more commonly known as generators) and alternators both have a DC output but they go about producing it in very different ways.

me=confused to ****.
You have an alternator. That's all you need to know.

a generator (dynamo) produces dc voltage directly, but not particularly efficiently. it is basically a motor being spun backwards.

an alternator produces ac current fairly efficiently, and then you have a rectifier circuit (usually built into the alternator housing) that converts it to dc.

No, it's not. Maybe that's what they call them (incorrectly, no offense), but it's not a Norwegian word.

Dynamo is an old word for generator.
The alternator is basically a generator - mechanically driven device that produces voltage.

Hit an equipment store that sells bearings, sprockets and such. They can provide you with an appropriate pulley.
