ECU questions plus misc ones

OK so now im picking up my New to me ecu tmw which is a N326 i believe for 1987 N/A , and satch has helped me out by telling me what i should check ( which i did and everything was in order or had to be replaced which i did. so i got ahead and replaced Main relay by drivers shock tower, relay under the airbox , both fuses/under dash and engine compartment, replaced fuel pump, sparkplug wires, spark plugs, coils etc ... so now i have made it to the last problem that i think it could be, the ECU. So ill give you a back ground story of what made me think of why the ECU is toast, one day i was pulling the ecu out of my car to get a friend to re-solder the stuff so it could fix the hesitation(someone told me, since i cleaned all the grounds) and i did NOT disconnect the battery and it was live and i pulled it out with it still powered up. now that is when it all stopped running and now it wont get fuel, spark , nothing ( well lights come one etc ) the fuel pump doesnt turn on, i tried getting spark nothing. so tell me, is this going to fix my problem or am i going to have to buy a new Engine harness for my car ( its really hacked up from previous owner but it ran fine driving 300km back to my driveway) any more tips would help , also it has been sitting for a year so what other preperations should i do before i start it tomorrow ?

Maybe I was just lucky, but I pulled my ECU out of my car 3-4 times with out the negative battery cable undone, and have no problems. The key wasn't on or anything... did you do it with the key on or something?

You might want to double check connectors FEM-01 and FEM-02 located just above and to the right of the ECU to see if they are secured together properly.

One other thing. If your voltage drops too low when cranking the car it will prevent certain components from working properly. You could measure the voltage while cranking at pin 3B to see if it's too low. The FSM suggests it should be 10 volts but it could be a bit lower than that and still be okay. Pulling the CAS or connecting up another CAS to the CAS plug and spinning the CAS would not pull down the voltage and this would be another way to check for spark.

Sorry but I would like to know if every time you are about to unplug your ECU you should remove the negative battery cable to be safe ???
