Differance in exhaust kits?

I just bought my girl a 86gxl from an older couple who bought it new. It was only driven in summer while they were in maine. the car has 36k on it. its all stock and clean. I did the whole new car fluid changes and so on. We took it out tonite and she put the spankin to some kid in a probe, so now she wants it to go a little better.

My questions for the experts are these.

1. I looked at a few different cat-back systems and I know you will all reccomend the Racing beat, but what about something like the kit from borla? is that a worthy exhaust and what would the differance between them be?

2. I was looking at the coils/ignition and they looked a little ratty. Is there a coil/ignition that you reccomend?

Any info is appreciated.~jk

The coil and ignition needs to be stock, no iginition coil setup works with the ECU. Buy new wires, that's about it.

The exhaust is seriously up to you. What you need to do is find some rx7s in your area and listen to the different exhausts. I personaly like the Corksport/SSAutochrome exhaust, but a lot of people don't.

The Borla Exhaust is wonderful. I'm running it on my 7 right now and couldn't be happier with it. Word of advice though, a new cat-back does very little other than sound quality. If you are looking for the most bang for the buck, get the Bonez race pipe or the Racing Beat downpipe/presilencer combo. RB advetises an 18 horsepower increse on an 87.

mine

I like my Dynomax cat-back. Low rumble at 3k, but from there on it isn't too loud. At least from the inside...

Smooth sounding.

A cat back system won't give much of a gain. Headers and a highflow cat will do much more. It will also be louder.

Borola makes a good system, so does corksport, racing beat and apex. You can't go wrong with any of those. A single side will produce more power but you'll loose the dual looks. Single is usually louder as well.

I would just stay away from ebay specials and fast n furious stuff.

Thats not true. The single exhaust is only going to be louder, a little lighter and a little cheaper(depending on what you buy). This has been discussed before and will no doubt come up again and again.

Thanks for your info. I'm not looking to go the cheap route by any means, I just wanted some feedback from others. This car really is my girls and Im not really going all out on it. I just want it to be a little faster so she can run strong with the other cars around here.

I was figuring on getting a header and high flow cat or a presilencer that looks like a cat. Just doing the basics really, try to keep the lady happy.

Thanks again, ~jk

Racing Beat is probably going to be the best option for you. Borla is a nice setup aswell but I haven't seen it up close as far as quality. I have only heard it. It sounds decent.

a road race header is meant for a long primary or true dual exhaust. if you are going collected use the streetable header/presilencer. I've never heard HKS setups on an Rx-7. HKS is supposed to be a good company, but a lot of the japanese exhausts are not to my liking with the buzz buzz.

A well-designed single exhaust produces more power on race cars. I don't think there is any significant performance difference when it comes to non-ported street car catback exhausts.

The stock coils are superb, I seriouslly doubt that they need replacing with 150K miles on it well alone only 40K miles.

Its not like the RX-7 is some lame honda that burns through coils and ignitors

where on the east coast are you? If you are going witha header i would recomend getting a high flow cat. I wish i had, i just have mine straight piped, to two glass packs and it's loud! but it's such a sexy sound, it will be comming off soon thoguh becuase of a loud exhaust ticket that i recently got. Even with the stock cat back, no cats, just header to stock y pip e it's pretty loud.
