With help from a Los Angeles shop that makes a similar kit for the Mazda Miata, I designed this kit for the 1986-92 RX-7. This shop will help me develop the kit, if I can convince them there if enough interest for the kit. My goal is that the kit will be priced under $300 (US dollars)and that it will require no permanent modification to the car.

Sorry, I don't get it - what's the point? If you're getting improved lights with better visibilty, maybe, if it's just for looks I've got more important things on my car to spend money on!

Yes,......the main difference is looks, but the factory 'barn door' headlights interfere with your forward vision. The lowered profile lights capture the essence of the RX-7 and improves the field of view. The lights that would be used in the kit are the same DOT approved lenses (High beams use all 4 lights) That Mazda used in their 1995 Miata M Speedster concept car that was designed at Mazda's Southern California R&D facility.

There was a guy (Blue90TII) who designed a similar mod for a little bit of nothing, and he put the instructions up on a website. I think it cost less than $100 to do.

For your kit, do you have to install a kill switch for the headlight motors, or are the linkages modified as well? That's about the only drawback to having this mod that I can see. Also, are all four lights the same type, such that you would NEED all four on to emulate brights?

very tight. agree with everyone else. are both the lights gonna be on, or is one of them gonna be for high beams?

 

All 4 lights would be on only for the high beams. the two outside lights would be just for the low beams. The up and down movement and low beam/high beam switch works like stock (no kill switch for the headlight motors)

However are they the blue lights? So looks really white/blueish at night like the new mercedes and the acura 3.2tl??

Are the light bulbs changeable? or do yu have to buy a whole new complete light.

I didn't vote because the kit does look hella nice, but I'm not interested in it. Good job though! It looks really good, and there actually might be some aerodynamic benefits to it. I would post close up pictures of the lamps, are they German? Hella? DOT approved? What wattage? Yadda yadda.

1989 GTUs "Big old headlights for me!"

 

I will have to test the prototype on another RX-7 that still has the flash to pass lenses in place. The FTP lenses may still work with the kit. As for the lights themselves they have H3 bulbs that are replaceable with the HID "look" bulbs. The company that provided the lights for Mazda's 1995 M Speesdster concept car, these are the same lights that will be used for the kit . I've been told that they are DOT approved and 1,000's of kits for the Miata has been sold without problems. Thanks for all the feed back so far.

how did you make them go up halfway without a kill switch? is there the option of having it go up all the way? (for adjustments, etc)

I looked at your site and I applaud your ingenuity. The look of your setup looks similar to my kit, but my kit is a lot more complicated, and is designed to work like a "factory" type installation. By the time my kit will be ready for the public, I will have spent a few thousand dollars in development (I've spent over a grand already) in tooling and prototype development cost. I will have to sale quite a few kits just to recoup my cost and break even (and this dose not include my time) I now have a solid kit design, but I want to make sure there is enough interest before I invest anymore time and money.
