No, the first set of #'s represents the width of the TIRE, the second number the sidewall(# represents % of tread width. i.e. a 100/40 tire is 100 mm wide and 40mm tall) the third set of #'s is the rim size. So, the 205/40/17 tires are 205 mm wide 40mm tall, and go on a 17 inch rim. The others are 185mm wide 70mm tall nd go on a 14 inch rim

your a bit mixed up there with your numbers its 205mm wide and 40% of that length is how tall the sidewall is, its not a measurement its the percentage, as you said

i think the main point was that the 3 inch air gap between the tire and rim might pose a problem..

Ummmm, the biggest? I think the biggest that would fit on there (safely) would be about a 205/75/14. That wouldn't be a good idea. Your best bet would be to buy new rims and tires.

If your sticking with the phone dials you should stick with the stock tire size. If you are looking for a performace upgrade you should buy a wheel/tire package. There are lots of them out there for just over the price of 4 new tires from a tire store.

The size package you would want would be a 17x7 rim with a set of 205/40/17 tires. These can be found everywhere on-line. Free shipping, tires already mounted and balanced, under $600. Make sure you get the proper lug pattern if you do this.

Ok I'm a tire dummy so I've got a dumb question as well. how big would 255/40/zr17's be??? I know its a 17" wheel but would you just divide 25.4 x 255 to find the width??? 25.4 = 1in. ??

I said that the sidewall # was the % of the width. I just used the 100/400 measurement for ease's sake. And, hondahater, there's about 2.5 cm in an inch, so, about 25 mm. So, if you have a 255 mm wide tire, it's about 10 inches. 255/25=10.2 Granted, that's not an exact measurement, and, you can always stretch/squeeze the wheel on a rim. But, that's a general idea.

lol, yea. Those aren't exact numbers, but they're fairly close. If you want exact, just google a metric conversion site.

thats the idea, i am buying new rims and rubber

the problem is, im afraid they will give me turning issues. my initial idea wasn't to put a bigger tire on my stock wheel lol. my question is would 205//40//17 give me turning issues (meaning too big)
