Clickity starter action

http://www.zukikrawlers.com/showthread.php?t=10991

Evidently cars other than RX have the clickity starter problems. I found this thread when searching for different alternators online.

I think RotaryRocket88 wrote a thread on how to fix clickity starter problems and the attached thread adds a little to that idea of how to fix the clickity.

the issue isn't the same problem for every car. i had one FC that had the issue and when i wired up a relay at the starter like in your post the starter would start every time but then drag on in the start position until i turned the key off. i had to simplify that car and run a wire from the ignition switch down to my new relay at the starter and bypass all of the BS starter cut and main relay crap wiring that was causing the main issue.

the relay at the starter will cure a worn out ignition switch which is generally the cause of the clicky starter symptom.

Hozzman started the thread; I merely hijacked it. The relay fix has been around awhile. Old VWs apparently have it done frequently: http://www.oldvolkshome.com/hardstart.pdf.

In my case, the ignition switch wasn't the problem. I replaced it with a new one, and the problem still existed. Polishing up the battery cable running to the main fuse helped for a short time, but the problem came back. The clutch switch had long since been bypassed, so the only thing left was the wiring itself. It would appear that the current drop created by traveling over 22 year old wires, various contacts, switches and relays was enough to make the starter function intermittently.

I wired in the new relay in April of last year, and since then it has started strong every time.

I've had a Radio Shack relay in for a couple of yrs on all three cars. After over a yr the clickity started up again on one of the cars. Swapped in a new relay and that fixed it......once more. Just saying...........if it starts acting up again.......swap in a new relay.

The improvement by RotaryRocket88 over my initial idea allows the factory alarm starter cut-off to work as stock. But what I REALLY liked was his idea to use the empty fuse slot as source for power to the starter via the Bosch relay as compared to wiring in a standard spade connector. Very trick and clean approach.

I also haven't had a single sticky starter event since I did the modification back in March. So simple, and so effective.

I had this problem terribly for well over 2 years sometimes it would take 7-8 turns to get it to start.
while painting the engine bay I removed everything and found a 5 pin ground plug under the trailing coil. I cleaned this ground on a bench grinder so all 5 pins were clean, cleaned the point it contacts the chassis and used a new bolt. Since I have not had this problem again. First turn every time.

The relay work-around is good for FD's. They are much worse with this problem than FC's.

i was merely stating that it IS NOT always such an easy fix. one customer got irritated and bought the relay kit that pettit offered, i installed it and then the starter would constantly spin even with the key in the on position versus the crank position. there's alot of crap in the stock wiring that can fail in various ways so not every car is the same.

perhaps in eastern states it is more of an issue but so far from experience this is much more prominent in FCs than FDs. but to elaborate even further this is an issue with much more than FC and FD, even REPUs and 1st gens have these issues. i have to do this fix on a REPU later this week. pretty much any rotary car i have worked on has this issue.

I had issues with my starter and replaced everything except my ignition switch. It was at fault. I direct wired a push start due to the ignition switch not being reliable.
