cats

I'm looking at an '87 gxl I want to buy. The owner says it's completely stock and the exhaust looks stock, but there is only one cat. I thought all NA's came with three cats? Did '87 gxl's only come with one?

Nope, its not stock. They came with one cat, and two precats. Precats only function for cold emissions, though.

What do You mean by Cold Emissions? When the car is Cold? or something else.

If so then I should toss my precats since I'm in Arizona.

I'm curious about this as well. Could I replace all three cats with a single C.A.R.B. certified high flow and be cool under Cali big brother emissions?

The two precats operate only under start-up, to remove cold-engine emissions. They do not function much during operating temp, and removing them will not affect normal running emissions. Since there is no way to test cold emissions, there is no worry.

You will pass emissions with a bonez set-up, however, keep in mind that you may fail visual if you do not have all three cats in place.

Both will pass CA emissons, however if you go someplace that really knows RX-7s and the FC in particular you may not pass the visual on a series 4 NA car. But to the average smog shop, you will not have any problems passing.

The dual cat is also CARB legal in CA on series 5 cars.

Because the series 4 NA cars have 3 cats, while the series 5 have only 2.

Yes I live in CA. I use a custom down pipe and Bonz turbo cat and the stock cat back (because I haven't been working and don't have the funds saved up for a new exhaust yet). I will probably go with either the RB or Corksport, eventually. Since I have a 'vert noise is a bigger issue than on a Coupe.

It hard to tell, since it went in when I put the 13BT in. I guess what it came down too was that I didn't trust the stock NA cat and the HI-flow Turbo model replacement allowed me to meet emissons and was cheaper than a new OEM or OEM knock off cat. See, I have the double wammy of having to meet NA emissons with a turbo car now.

And as many on this board know I am a firm (and often outspoken) believer in meeting the emisson requirements in CA (or the area you are in) while still having decent HP. Responsible performance I call it, so unlike Silverrotor and others, I am against ripping out all the cats or other emisson controls on a street car so that my car stinks and pollutes the area for a couple of extra HP. That meager extra little bit of performace is just not worth it in my eyes. If you need to take polluting short cuts on a street car to win or whatever, you got the worng car IHMO. Buy something that has the HP you need without ******* up the emissons system.
