Exclamation cat

Well my i replaced my clutch today, and took my exhaust off do get to the drive shaft, so my mufflers are real beat up so i decided to take them of from the cat back, well i got the clutch in and i start to drive around to break it in, well i stop and i look at the exhaust and the cat is glowing hot. So i wasnt worried about it all that much but you know. So i start to drive again and the cat just falls down. So i pull over and the car was so hot that it melted the hanger, So has any one had this problem before and would gutting it help. Let me know. Thanks.

Yes, gutting it would help the heat and congestion problems. It will also sound different and flow more freely.

you would get some power out of the exhaust and also a lot louder. you can either get high flow cat that frees up some power and keep it quite or gut your cat.

Pretty quick is a relative phrase, but you would probably free up somewhere around 5 to 15hp

Get a high-flow cat unless you have a smog hook-up.

Would what make the cat red hot? It shouldn't be doing that, a high flow cat should not get red hot. If it does it is one or a combination of being too small, you're running way too rich (maybe even way too lean, I've heard), or the cat is clogged. It is very common for the stock cats to be clogged from melting down simply from age coupled with the intense heat of the rotary's exhaust.

It was probably clogged, causing it to get hotter than it was supposed to. Lets hope anyways. You could replace it with a presilencer, since emissions are not an issue. Good Luck.

http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda2.htm <------ a good picture of what im talking about, and location of purchase if desired.
