Car is not redlining

i think it's the belts. i'm not too sure. i've tightened one of the belts that was actually pretty loose to spec, but iono if that really does anything. belts are in good condition. i don't htink it's the clutch, cause it pulls pretty hard up til 5 rpms, then it stays there and doesn't go any higher and i hear high squeeking noise. i'm assuming its from the engine bay

The belts won't stop the car from getting over 5k, but they might be slipping under load to cause the squeaking you hear.

Free-rev the car in neutral to see if it only happens when under load. Check for plugged cats too.

If you have a n/a it could be stuck aux (5/6) ports, take them out and clean them.

wow, neither the belts or the clutch are going to cause you to stop from redlining.

It's most likely the TPS (see Throttle Positioning Sensor) gone bad, or out of calibration.

so if i redline in neutral and it still only gets up to around 5 rpms to 6 and stays there what does taht mean? couldn't that also be belts slipping? gah... aren't the aux ports hard to get too?

Well think about it: what turns the belts?

The engine. So, the belts have absolutely ZERO effect on the engines ability to redline. (With the obvious exception of the alternator belt, w/ no electricity you get no engine power.) What happens when it gets up to 5000 rpms? Does it stutter, or just act like that is as high as it goes? I said TPS because another member on here had a similar problem, and after a long long search that is what it was. It's not hard to fix, it's just a couple of screws.

It would be nice to know more about your car however, is it a turbo II? If so, then you can ignore these guys talking about the 5th and 6th ports cause they are only on N/A's. In fact, just go ahead and ignore them anyway because like the belts, the 5th and 6th ports have ZERO.....NONE....NO effect on the ability to redline. All they do is open up and let more air in for more power up high.

Download the FSM (see Factory Service Manual) from RX7city.com, look in there for exact instructions on doing ANYTHING to your car; then search search search away on this forum! Welcome to the wide world of cars.

Have you checked your timing? TPS comes strongly to my mind, too, but if you can't free rev to redline it may be something else.

Im a little new to rotaries, having just been working on one for about 2 weeks now, but IMHO, I think you might have a problem with your secondary injectors. The secondary injectors, at least on the NA ive been working with, not too sure about TIIs, only operate at high RPM to provide supplemental fuel the primaries cant feed efficiently, so if your secondary injectors had gone out, you would be starving for fuel about 4.5k, especially under any kind of load. The squeeling you describe might be your fuel pump straining, or a product of the engine leaning itself as it starves for fuel. Its not your belts, they have 0 effect on engine operation, they are engine dependant, and there is no way they are so tight theyve locked your engine.

hmm... well i have a 89' n/a. i belive when i free rev it doesn't reach redline. i don't know what it reaches too. if it's TPS it's just the throttle positioning that's on top of the intake manifold?
