I own an 88 rx-7 non turbo currently with 6 port 13B. Last week i installed a new exhaust manifold gasket, thermostat and NKG spark plugs. Upuntill i blew the gasket she ran beautiful. As of now, she starts but will not idle and has NO acceleration whatso ever. Also is dumping fuel vapor out the exhaust. Its acting like a flooded engine would and seems to be gettin more fuel than it is burning. Can someone please help me with the cause and solution.

Agreed. You're aware of the leading/trailing - front/rear rotor plug differences, right? Also, if the wires are on correctly, put your old plugs back in (you kept them, right?) and see if the problem goes away. Defective new plugs have been known to happen. (Rare, but not out of the question.)

ok thank you. Problem is, yes wires are on correctly and the reason i was changing the plugs is one was sorta cracked so i tossed them. How ever, could the plug gap have anythin to do with it?

lol was just curious... dont know to much about therotary butyes i do know the plugsare different. And i bought NGK top notch plus for RX-7

pull the plugs and verify that they are BUR7EQ leadings, and BUR9EQ trailings...

ok, i have all the right plugs and they are NOW in the right places. Thanx for tip. However problem is not as bad but still there. All coils have good fire but car will not idle properly or rev correctly (slow to rev, idles ,or tries, at about 200 rpm) What should i check next?

what does it sound liek when it revs up? Almost sounds you have a major vacuum leak somewhere causing you to not idle/rev up correctly. Hold the revs at say 2500rpm. Does it sound like its missing at all? Be sure to double, even triple check you have your wires going to the right plugs and coils, and make sure they are secure to the plugs.

still sounds like your wires are on wrong. check your manual and be sure you have the plug wires in the correct respective locations.

Yeah all my plugs/wires are in the right order as per the shop manual i have. I'll check today again to listen for the missfires but i dont remember it sounding that last night. Could the crank angle sensor have anything to do with it, or more relatively the timing.

yes, very much so. But since it was running great before you did all this stuff, it leads us to believe that you didn't come in contact with the cas.

ok- so a vacuum leak is pretty much gonna mean i have a hole in a hose or my apex seals are shot correct? and im still really new to rotaries so wtf is the cas?

Not to beat a dead horse but...

In one of the manuals that I had, it was marked incorrectly. So just to clarify:

Trailing Plugs: Go in the TOP.

Leading Plugs: Go in the BOTTOM.

Beat that dead horse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing you did to the car would change how it runs except the plug wires, it must not be a vacum leak because you said it has no power, vacum leak will only affect idle. duuuuu. Check the coolant temp sensor behind the t-stat housing, make sure it is still plugged in, it is unlikely you knocked it off when you changed the t-stat because of where it is, but at least you'll now know where it is. It could be flooded because of the wire mix up, in that case, pinch of the feul line and start the car, as soon as it runs, have some one unpinch it while you work the pedal, a flooded rotary is very very very haed to start. Make sure the air flow meter plug is ok also, it is located under the air filter box, follow the intake tube from the engine to find it. now you know where that is. Another problem may be that the throttle switch got out of adjustment. If you dont have the LED set up to adjust it, your book should tell you how to do it with a volt/ohm meter, depending what kind of book you have, there is a lot of **** books out there, need I say, Kragen auto parts?? pep boys??

ok well the car starts up fairly easy, not as well as it should thouh so i will try the fuel line thing and the book i have is model/year specific shopmanual from Mazda and is pretty good (minus the trouble shooting sections) but again my plugs and wires are on correctly. i will check my coils again for good spark today but like i said they had good fire last time. But other than no power, everything is mostly fine,she starts and sounds fine (no clanking or knocking). Still dumping white fuel vapor smokeout exhaust (small) upon start but re-arranging my plus fixed most of that. But again in reference to turboryan i'llhold the rpm at 2500 today when im off and see if it misses. In the mean time anyother ideas y'all got forme to check?

oh god, ive had my wires on upsidedown for a year but the car runs fine

roflmao... yeh i knew a friend who ran his backwards on purpose and it ran fine aswell but, his was a 1st gen and in shitty condition so he was only trying to blow it up (failed)

I have a HAYNES RX7 manual that states the Leading pluges go in the upper spark plug holes and the Trailing plugs go in the lower holes

SO WHICH WAY IS CORRECT?

The Haynes is a misprint. Mine said the same thing but it is wrong. If you get a flashlight, you can actually see the L and T cast into the housings on your engine.

It sounds like mine did when I got the wires backwards, I was having to floor it in my first gen to take off with traffic it was so bad.
