Boost Limit? Fuel Cut?

I have an 88 TII with Bonez intake, RB cat back exhaust, autometer boost gauge.

With that set up I am usually getting about 7 to 7.5 lbs of boost. When it is cold the boost starts to climb to about 8 or a bit over.

When the boost starts to go over 8(noticed in 3rd) the engine kind of sputters, pops, hard to describe sound.
I can feel the vibration from the noise in the gas pedal.

There is no real degrade in power just slight.

I have heard that fuel cut for overboost is like hitting a wall. Is that true?

Does detonation sound the same as on a piston engine?
(ping)

What does detonation sound like on RX-7's?

Thanks
steve

FUEL CUT feels like a harsh.... sometimes you can hit soft cut if the car is making noises its not supposed stay off the gas unless you want a new engine

I have ordered the FCD and it will be here soon. In the meantime I have put the stock airbox on with a K&N filter inside. What a difference, it feels so much less responsive.

Do I have to worry about leaning out?

I am only reaching near 8 to 8.5 when it is cold, otherwise I am mostly near 7 to 7.5.

thanks
steve

Fuel cut is approx 8.6 psi on your car. When you hit it, the normal response is for the right foot to instantly come off the gas pedal. Real jerky feeling. Bigtime. Here's a good article to read: http://www.teamfc3s.org/info/articles/fcd/diy_fcd.htm

Thanks for the link Hailers!!!!

I have ordered a Rotary Performance FCD.

I am running my stock fuel system.

I am not planning on doing any more mods that could raise my boost levels. I am happy with the car as it is. As long as it is not cold out the car always boosts below 8lbs. Only when it is cold does it get near the fuel cut off. Am I safe or should I look into more fuel delivery.

Also: Does anyone now a good Rotary mechanic in the Rochester NY area. I would love to be able to take my car to someone that knew what they were doing!!!!

Sorry.

I recommend you get some fuel mods if you run an FCD.

Sorry ROCHSTEVE, Hailers is a newbie to turbos. I've rebuilt the one I have and its been a regular driver since maybe August of last year. I have a downpipe with a presilencer from Mazdatrix. I can hit fuel cut below fifty degrees outside temp but not if the temp is over seventy degrees. I have a stock cat(presilencer in my case) back. No fuel cut defender. My fuel pressure gauge reads close to fifty psi when at full boost on a cold day. I ain't worried. I've a meter looking at the voltage at the 02 sensor and its in the .7 range. I ain't a bit worried. I also have a rebuilt engine with turbo sitting in the garage. What, me worry? I don't think you need to worry either. We're both talking running just below fuel cut. We should not worry.

Don't worry till you put that FCD on and instead of 8 psi on a cold night, you creep to about 13 or 14. Then you get to worry

Move to Texas where it does not get that cold that often. Less worry involved. Although its about 53 degrees this morning, which is unusual for this time of year. Global warming? Hmmmm.

I lived in Ennis when I was little. I don't plan on returning anytime soon.

In Syracuse there is guy that I take my car to. His name is Mark Aichner(sp?) and goes by CNYRX7TECH on the forum. He works for a place called Marsteller's Service and I highly reccommend him.
