BDC's FC3S Build Thread (July 2010)
But it sure sounded wicked as Hell, for sure....now, just how does one go about getting such a beast inspected??
Folks, this car actually is on the street. Started up w/o a hitch, no smoke, no rattling, no high metallic sounds...it's just all beat up outside like 90% of the 1stgen RX-7's on the road.
Thanks for making the meet, Brian!

Yeah it's getting old and needs body work especially on the driver's rear quarter. Paint is fading. It's sat outside too much. Someday I'll get it all fixed and re-done.

Hey BDC do you do any drag racing? If so what do you think your FC do in the 1/4miles? I would love to see what your 500+rwhp can do. Also speaking about racing there's an event coming up at Houston this month.
My guess is he has been busy. I have spoken to Brian on the phone a few times and so can tell you he is very generous with his time, which can slow down your personal projects
I'm still alive, guys. Haven't done much in a couple months although this oughta be the season where I go hammer it on the dyno for the biggest number in this nice old weather.
Planning a move soon and got other things goin' on. Unfortunately those bigger things take up more of my money than I'd like so I don't have it to throw at the car right now. It's running good though otherwise. Doing little goofy tuning here and there.
Still waiting on my knock meter box. Oh, by the way, I've not posted that up for you guys. Found it a couple months ago. Know of two folks who have one. They use stock knock sensor, too. One-step calibration and then you're good to go. Everyone needs one! Check out the video towards the bottom.

Doubt I'll be able to go though let alone race. Still not where I wanna be with the car and it's on hold at the moment.
Story of my life it seems.

The Knock Meter from Lithuania
I'll be using the FD one although I think all the FC, FD and Rx8 sensors are the same (even tho' they have different part numbers). Plan on using one on the Turbo II permanently and a second knock meter for remote tuning.
I know it works. Buddy of mine has one and it banged red when his wastegate hose popped off allowing boost to go to the high 20's. Here's my spill on it: Our engines are particularly sensitive to knock events (be they detonation, pre-ignition, spark blowout, poor tuning, or anything else in-between) yet hardly any of us run any knock detection stuff shy of perhaps having a PFC w/ the Commander and the Knock Reading configured to display up on it.
I've been on the hunt for some sort of visual, bright LED type meter that can show the "stairstepping" nature of knock and warn me when something's amiss. I started looking around a couple months back and ran across this little gem. The other ones I found required a GM sensor w/ knock box and the cost was prohibitive. This little guy has massive bright LED's, uses a factory knock sensor, and is small and easy to install. It's also $50 shipped and takes two weeks to arrive. It just doesn't get much better than that.

While I'm on the subject of it -- here's three videos XBoxthug posted on Youtube of this same knock meter:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZkZR...eature=related

Before we knew how to calibrate it properly, I had him advance his timing across the board by 20* on the Haltech to try and induce knock. On the 2nd video, you can see the car starting to stutter, presumably from either too-advanced pinging or from running leaner than stoich, and then see the knock meter respond.

jk. jk
- Get engine fully warmed up and idling
- Rev (in neutral) to redline and hold there.
- Set the calibration **** to read one GREEN light on
That's it. You can tap on the sensor and it'll bang the Big Bad Ninja Uh-oh RED light on. Pretty cool.
It's pretty easy to see how big the box is from the pictures but I think the diagram is posted from the guy who makes 'em. It's teeny tiny.
Edit: Just got a better look at Alex's video of it on his dash. He's got an AEM or Innovate 52mm (2 1/16") wideband gauge to the left of the knock meter and the meter is hardly any bigger. I'd say no wider than 3" and probably closer to 2.5" wide. Looks like it'd fit straight on top of the steering column and not impeded anything plus be right IN YOUR FACE with the LED action.

Figured you'd jump on it. It's pretty much perfect for what I was looking for. Of course, it doesn't guarantee a person won't grenade their motor, but it'll sure give them some sort of warning ahead of time to better react rather than hammering through 3rd or 4th gear, letting out, then getting the dreaded bdp bdp bdp bdp idling lawnmower thing.
