Hi everybody,
I was just wondering what kind of tips and pointers would you give someone as far as first learning to drive stick? and also driving stick for the first time and it being an rx7? what are some tips for higher performance and longer life? thanks in advance.

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
Just the basics:
1. Release gas pedal
2. Push in clutch
3. Select forward gear
4. Slowly release clutch (release clutch faster on an incline)
5. Slowly re-apply pressure to the gas pedal. (apply pressure faster if on an incline or you wish to increase speed)
6. Determine speed... if you wish to go faster than 7000 RPMs in the gear you are in, repeat step 1-5 moving the forward gear up one each time.

USE the CLUTCH.
If anything starts to go wrong, (like almost killing it on take off) just press the clutch and try again. May seem strange, but its better than killing the car in an intersection.
Oh, and empty parking lots are good for starters.

my recommendation is not to learn to drive stick in a car with no torque and a copper clutch. =] Basically, you need to find the sweet spot in the clutch, where it just start to grab and move the car forward. Once your foot remember where that is, you can take off smoothly and shift nice.

In an empty lot, bring the RPMs up to 1500, put it in gear, and then slowly let out the clutch, making sure to keep the revs at 1500. That's a good way to get used to taking off.

One thing that's pretty helpfull is to keep the idle high. When my car's warming up it's impossible to stall! However, I suppose you probably don't want to do that... The hard part isn't shifting when moving it's getting started.
Listen to the engine and feel the car. Give a bit of gas and let the clutch out slowly. If the car is about to stall give it gas or clutch or a little of both. The engine sounds funny and the car shakes when it's about to stall. Do things very slow at first so you can figure it out. #1 rule don't be scared of it! It's easy and you can do it. My sister learned it in 3 tries (2 minuites) and has never looked back.

everybody is straight up about clutch up gas down can't add anything to that except you might find this trick mighty handy if you find your self on a hill and you have to start from a stop position without rolling backwards into that new 740 , you know the one that the Judge of traffic court drives, while you are stopped clutch in foot on brake place right hand on e-brake pull up remove foot from brake gradually to see if e-brake is holding this gives you foot for gas and foot for clutch hand for brake and hand for steering. to start slowly release clutch while depressing gas- you will feel the the car trying to go foworad then release the e-brake and you are on your way. PEACE . ex.

I learned in a N/A FC, but I'm good
I remember when a was pulling out from an underground garage(very steep upward incline), well there were cars in front paying for the parking so I had to stop on that monster (I was still getting the hang of driving a manual) and a car stops right behind me, "oh great" and now there are no cars in the pay booth so I am looking at the car behind and it is my turn to go forward.. I laid the biggest burnout you'll ever seen !! (in fear of stalling the car or going in reverse downhill). The parking lot was full of smoke and I was a little shocked and the lady at the booth gave me a dirty look, and my g/f was like "what did you do that for", I was "just testing something out..."
those were the good old days learning to drive
