All tranny porblems solved by $18 peice

i was thinking of buying a new tranny because i was afraid mine was going out because i couldnt shift into first without shifting into second first and then the same with reverse and could downshift to first unless i was going 1 mph and below.....i also couldnt shift into second at high revs without grinding.....so of course i have tranny problems....NO.....i replaced the bushings under my shift lever and EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM IS GONE!! So for those of you out there that might think ur tranny is biting the dust replace ur bushings first...world of a difference

What are the bushings? Those rubber thingies that go around the shifter?

The bushings are two plastic pieces that go on the shift lever. Check www.mazdatrix.com for a good writeup and prices for the bushing kit. Dont buy them at the Mazda dealer because they dont give you all the bushings needed and will swear the other ones dont exist.

I've got two blown autos. Please be my guest and fix them for $18.

Much like saying that if I put on a huge $300 spoiler, my car will gain 60hp!! Actually there might be a better reference to gaining 5% by using purple motor oil.

Man... did you even read the fellow's post? He said it fixed his particular problem, on a MANUAL tranny. Not some ghetto auto... learn to drive stick, man.

loool.....yeah....my basic input was before you do anything just get out ur 10mm and check the bushings in the shifter....i knew i had some probs because of it and i knew they had comletely disentigrated but man.....i didnt think ALL of my problems were because of a few peices of plastic over these last two years....hell the thing never grinds into reverse anymore at all....i can actually downshift into first without having to be completely stopped.....im just saying make sure to check these things it makes a world of difference

I'm more suprised that someone didn't get defensive about the royal purple.
I'm not saying he isn't correct, the shifter bushings do cause alot of problems. Even in a manual though, I'd like to see a 18 dollar part fix a mechanical failure. But that wouldn't be catagorized as any problem,<SARCASM> thats an anomaly, especially with n/a trannies.</SARCASM>
And don't get so defensive, I'm just a facisitic odious sweet guy who finds his last laughs in rousing up some defensive manuevers due to someone who takes him a little to seriously.

Coincidentaly, this thread has some good information. I might just be looking into the shifter bushings when i start installing everything from the swap.

yep both......and im just statingfor people to check them...cuz i checked them once a year ago and they were cracked.....and a year later im driving down the road and all the sudden im doing 360's with my shift ****.....and there was zero left of my bushings....and even before i knew they were gone and that i had problems i never associated these probs with a couple of peices of plastic.....anyhow....if you have shifting issues just make sure to check the condition of ur bushings....simple matter.....you may have other problems.......but to me the diference wasnt night and day it was more like a blackhole and a supernova

That's a very common problem and a very easy fix.

He, He Told you Derek.
I am having huge tranny problems with my car, I spun the driveline in two, and it went flying up and brokt the shift linkage, and bent the hell out of the output shaft. After tearing into to fix it, I noticed the bushings, rembering how DlTreezan's car drove, I told him to try replacing them. Damn it feels good to be right!!

I buy them from the dealership all the time, for prices cheaper than what Mazdatrix lists. They always take 2 days to arrive.

I'll bite. I have watched the dyno change by converting to synthetic oil (RP, specifically) on a blown 347 on an engine brake. An oil change netting 18 hp is too wide of a varience to chalk up to variability between runs.
The theory behind why they outperform conventional oils is perfect, the researched proof exists and has not been contested, so why make comment on it? No one has ever claimed 5% (2% is the RP/RB claim on a rotary), either.
I believe your above comment to be made out of inscience, thus rendering it invalid.

You should never shift into first gear when the car is moving anyway, FWIW.

This is for an FB tranny. The lower bushing does not exist in FC trannies, but the discussed bushings are the same.

would this possibly be the same cause that has my tranny gind slightly when i put it into reverse without having putting it in 5th before R? And also when shifting at high rpms into second I get a grind? This sound vaguely familiar to the problem I had before rebuilding my tranny! you aren't telling me that these problems could have been fixed with 20 bucks instead of 350?
DAMN! But then again I have a brand new tranny! Oh well!
