'90 vs '91 differences

Ok, trivia time.

What are the differences between the '90 and '91 NA's?

For instance, is there a difference between the switch's for the turn signal and cruise like there is between the '89 and '90?

How about the switch's to lower the convertable top?

How about gas tank capacities?

How about (you fill in)?

Im guessing your talking about vert's. The 89-91 will ALL share the same parts. Everything. If something is different or a feature you don't have but you want, you can always swap it in. Hope that helps

Actually, I'm certain that the fuel capacities are different. I just asked around about this but my '89 'vert has an 18.5 gallon gas tank, I'm not so sure the '90-'91's had that, 16 methinks.

Although I've not seen it with me two eyes, I'm fairly certain that the controls around the guage surround are different between the '90-'91 models. I can say that from '89-'90 they are the exact same, I own an '89 and I had a '90.

Although this isn't a difference in the car itself, they offered fewer models in '91. Trimed it down to the Coupe, Convertible, and Turbo II. In '90 it was GTU, GXL, Convertible, Turbo II, and the GTUs (sort of).

As far as other differences with the actual cars, I would like to be enlightened because I can't think of any.

Yeah, I've suddenly had the urge to go buy one. For the longest time I've wanted an FD, which I've been saving for. But between when I started liking the car until now I've been somewhat disenchanted with it because of all the horror stories.

So I think I'm going to find the worlds perfect Turbo II, and spend the money I saved on not buying the FD in modifications for the Turbo II. Should be a pretty mean FC.

I know Turbo II's aren't perfect when it comes to reliability, but from what I can tell they're a bit better than FD's for some reason. That and I won't have to deal with all the vacuum hoses associated with the sequential twin setup.

Now that's funny Took 1 year to find my 1992 TII (91 stock sold in 92 with slight different VIN #). And the week I bought mine 2 prestine black 91 TIIs popped up in Atlanta (but I wanted midnight blue).

Mykl,

Good call on the FD. That 91 mica blue modded/emmaculent one I posted here last week is still available I think.

Gawd, I love that mica blue, and I saw the ad for it still up last night when I looked around to see what was available. Unfortunately I won't be prepared to buy until I get back from Saudi in January.

That paricular probably won't be there, but I'm sure I'll be able to find one somewhere. I'm not picky about color either, although that blue is so nice. The only color I'd really rather not have is red, but I could easily deal with it.

My colors of choice would be Brilliant Black, or Innocent Blue Mica (that's the correct name, right?).

I've just heard of too many people going through 3, 4, or even five engines in the FD to want one. I want seat time, not wrench time.

The 89 and 90 Verts had 4.10 rear ends even if they had autos, but the 91 shifted to a 3.9 rear end like all the other automatics (even the 5 speeds if that isn't bizarre).

The 91 also shifted to engine speed sensitive power steering like the GTu and you got the smaller rear brake rotor unless you got the leather package.

Other than that and about 30 lbs the 90 and 91 were the same.

According to the Mitchell Repair Manuals and insurance estimating manuals the gas tank Mazda P/N and mounting hardware was the same for all 89-91 RX7s at 18.6/18.5 US gallons.

I don't know where the rumor of a smaller gas tank in 91 came from... probably someone bought a wrecked car with and earlier gas tank.

I went and looked it up, I was wrong about the gas tank thing. Although the size does vary from the early models to the late models.

GTUs = Turbo II, but with a six port n/a engine.

It's as stripped down as it can be, no sunroof, I don't think it has power windows. Basically, anything that it doesn't need it doesn't have so it can be as light as possible.

GTU = base model

Of course, I'm only speaking for '89-'90. Although I'm not sure which years, but the GTU in '88 (I believe) became the GTUs in '89 and then for a very very limited run in '90. Only 100 GTUs's were made in '90.
