Unhappy 5psi

Ok I finally got my car running great. It no longer cuts out at 6k rpms. I can take her clear to redline . But on my AUTOMETER boost gauge, it only reads 5psi if not lower. I dont know if I trust that gauge but it seems to work OK. The car runs pretty damn quick too. Whay psi should I be hitting (relatively). And what should I start looking at. I was thinking possibly a clogged cat, leaking line. I replaced some of the vac lines under the IC when I had it off. Or the turbo is just plain worn. Sorry if this question is rhetorical, but I didn't know what to search for. Thanks for the help,
Chris

"I was thinking possibly a clogged cat"

I take it he has a cat.

is it a 87-88 or 89-91? 87-88 run 5psi stock but with 3" downpipe and intake you should be running higher. I'd take a look at your cat.

Well, yea, but in what gear? He will get 5-6psi in first and second always, as the engine load isn't big enough to produce power that will overcome the wastegate. In 3rd and higher is where he should be getting more boost (and that's if he has a cat-back exhaust). If not, I agree, check the cat and/or hoses going to/from the intercooler to the throttle body.

A worn turbo will not just run 5psi. If the bearings are bad, then you'll know it because it will take forever to spool up..

sorry I should be a little more specific. I have an 87 and the HKS is the catback. WHen I put the exhaust on, I looked at the cat and it seemed to pretty clean(what I could tell). How do I test the cat? Also In first and second I will get about 5psi I never have enough room to test it out in the higher gears. Thanks for the help guys.
