OK, I have a vacuum leak, a pretty bad one.It sounds like its coming from behind the UIM/ TB. Ive check the following:

-all hoses/ connections to IC
-vacuum spider/ oil injectors
-brake booster/ FPR lines
-boost sensor/ BAC lines
-TID
-many block offs and caps (all in place)

Car has no emissions, so thats really all the vac lines. Ive sprayed carb cleaner on basically the entire damn engine, as well as soapy water and I CAN NOT FIND IT!!!! any ideas? Im open to ANY suggestions!!

ON the back of the throttle body on a 88turboii, you have four vac lines lined one above the other. Only one of those can cause a vacuum leak. That would be the bottom one. So reach back there with the intercooler off and feel to see if the bottom one is on. It should be running to that water thermo valve next to the thermowax. It could be loose at the water thermo valve.

 

mine has 3, two are connected and 1 is capped. thanks though...BTW, I double checked to be sure just now.

 

carb cleaner isnt THAT good at finding these leaks. Run down to your local auto store and get some "Starter Fluid" for about $2-3. That **** aerosols (mist) and REALLY raises the idle. IT's kind of a stream mist.. so it's pretty accurate as for finding leaks.

Are you sure it's not the little black spacer on the TB/UIM? Mine was leaking from there for months b/c the bolts weren't tightened enough!! Rememver, vacuum = intake. So check ALL sources in the air system, not just vac tubes .

 

Cover opening to the AFM so it can't draw in air, and then hook up the vacuum pump to a vacuum line and pump it up. If there isn't a vacuum leak, the system should hold vacuum (watch the gauge on the pump). Use the mechanics stethiscope to trace the hissing.

 

Dude this might sound stupid but it works try Windex the ammonia in it will do the same as carb cleaner and it wont dissipate as quickly and when it dries you don’t know it was even there. Good luck finding your leak.

 

If you want to get silly but always get results, you can use propane to find your leaks.

HAILERS, I thought that bottom vacuum line was to the oil injectors...

 

Seems the 87 car is different from the 88. On my 87 there are four metal nipples. The large one goes to the spider for the oil injectors. The one below it goes to the fuel injector *air bleeds* which is that connection b/t the two oil injectors on the intake manifold. Its not for oil injectors. Its for fuel injectors bleeds. Bleeds being those plastic cups the fuel injectors sit in. The bottom metal nipple on my car is the only one that is pulling a vacuum from the throttle body, and it goes to the water thermo valve that is attached to the thermowax. The forth one is capped.

Bottom line on my 87 is that the top three are all connected together in the throttle body and that passage goes to a quarter inch hole IN FRONT of the butterflies. Therefore they don't get a vacuum, but draw filtered air to the fuel injector bleeds and the oil injectors. The suction is from the direction of the air bleeds and oil injectors.

 

Mine is an '87 as well...I guess I didn't consider the one below the big one as part of the group. I have only dealt with the vacuum lines on my car once (changed almost all of them, so hopefully I won't have to deal with them again) so I may have been mistaken.

 

So I found the leak tonight at BNR. Turns out my fuel leak and my vacuum leak were one in the same! the grommet on the rear secondary was busted and caused both leaks. Replaced it and my car runs SO much better. idles well and all!! Im excited and going to bed now! Thanks for the suggestions guys!
