I never even wave at, let alone speak to rx8 owners. most of them are idiots.

Today at work getting ready to go on my workbreak

Co workers walking to their donk parked next to me: Oh ****, look at brandon's car! It's like fast and the furious. Man, where's the nitrous at? What you got under the hood, a 320?

Me: *laughter* Nope. Lawmower motor with sea doo twin turbo. ****'s custom. Everyone's doing it in japan.

Co workers not buying my bullshit: Nah, you bullshittin, what's under the hood? ****'s low cuz!

Me: *still laughing* Voodoo magic doritos on a stick. Tops out at 50 mph usually. Sometimes i push it to about 60. Engine aint got no pistons in it, it's a two stroke and seadoo turboed.

Co workers: Alright man....

Sucks i can't bullshit everyone but it doesn't stop me from trying. I really dont like going over 60 though. My car IS pretty damn low and i suppose that's a good thing.

The other night some guy at a gas station when i was having a convo with another co worker admiring i do all my own work had something to say. I think i mentioned gas mileage (said it was a 1.3L rotary engine naturally aspirated) and the random guy is like "that bronco over there is mine. I'll trade ya straight up. This thing drinks gas. I bet that little car is better on fuel than it."

"20mpg BABYING the car shifting at 3k and cruising at 2k. Playing, you can WATCH the needle go down"

"man, i think you're full of ****"

Doesn't matter if i tell the truth or spew ricer talk. People just dont know what they're looking at.

Other day, friend of mine rode with us to the bike shop. ON the way back his friend told him something about rotaries not having any top end.

Me: They're all top end, decent midrange and low end depending on how many rotors, porting, tune, turbocharger sizing.....etc.

Him: No, he means they just keep reving and dont have a govenor and you can just keep going. Like, there's no top speed.

Me: top speed is dictated by gearing. My rev limit is ALSO dictated by gearing. I can only go so fast in first gear before i have to upshift, Same with second. Probably the other gears too. I dunno man, i'm still learning about it myself but i'm pretty sure your friend has no clue what he's talking about. Car will not go any faster than the gears allow but there's no rev limiter on the car. I usually shift at the warning buzzer or shortly after hearing it because it doesn't make **** for power up that high. Stock ports (i'm told streetport but the po is a lying shitsack ricer anyway....). Stock tune.

Him: Oh.

Tales from the car show

I was at a local show with the car last weekend and had a few WTF moments. Now, it's all about how you handle them. Belittling someone for not knowing every intricacy about the rotary is just stupid and might get you punched in the nose (make sure to press assault charges). But if you instead try to gently correct misinformation, you'll find that there is a little bit of truth to their misunderstanding, they are just confused from 3rd or 4th hand stories (ie. my cousin's dog's best friend's sister had one of the factory V6 RX-7s they made in 2004).

The following conversations are a bit paraphrased, but you get the idea...

Older guy: Is that a 4 cylinder?
Me: It's actually a 2 rotor Wankel engine.
OG: You running nitrous? Is that the solenoid? (pointing to the FPR)
Me: That's the fuel pressure regulator, and those on the side of the manifold are actually secondary fuel injectors.
OG: Wow. Did you somehow manage to strap a supercharger onto that engine?
Me: That's a Garrett turbocharger, a GT4088R.
OG: Turbo! It must be fast.
Me: It's actually terrifying and wants to kill me everytime I drive it. 400 wheel HP at low boost, 500 wheel HP at high boost.
OG: *deer in headlights look* That's more power then almost all of these V8s *amazed look*
Me: Yes, yes it is.

It was actually a pleasant conversation. He came away more informed, and we chatted for a bit about transmissions (he was surprised to learn it was a 5 speed, all those muscle cars people seem to be married to automatics).

The next one was a perfect example of "a little bit of information is dangerous".

Guy in his 70s to his son & grandson: That's a radial engine.
Me: It's really a two rotor Wankel rotary engine.
70s: Like in boats.
Me: ??
70s: They put those in boats. They add 3 and four rotors to them and go like stink.
Me: Mazda actually only made production 2 and 3 rotor engines, and the 3 rotor is exceedingly rare, available in only in Japan, NZ and Oz. All the North American rotary cars made by Mazda were 2 rotor. A 4 rotor is a fully custom piece, requiring significant work. So there won't be very many boats with 3 or 4 rotor engines. (now, I'm sure there are a few 3 and 4 rotor boats around, but let's face it, you're not going to drive down to the marina and see one)
70s: Do you know what the problems are with this engine?
Me: What? (call me sadistic but I always LOVE it when someone starts to tell me about my car)
70s: They had a problem with the housing cracking around the spark plug holes, so they upgraded the radiator to provide better cooling so the metal didn't crack.

(See, there is some truth in this, but like most of these misconceptions, the facts are a bit off)

Me: Well, actually, the cracking issue is in the end iron for certain years of engine, and isn't really cooling related. While Mazda did change the rad design several times over the course of these cars, it was primarily for other reasons such as making bleeding out air easier. The end iron issue was fixed with a stronger casting, and Mazda has continued to slightly alter the cooling jacket around the spark plug holes for more efficient cooling primarily to help stop detonation in turbo applications.
70s: What's that? *points to the intake manifold*
Me: That's the intake manifold. It's a custom piece that I made.
70s: Is it injected or carbureted?
Me: Fuel injected with a full standalone EFI system which I can program with my laptop.

Now, after we got of the rotary topic we had a bit of a conversation about all kinds of stuff. Turns out he is one of those conspiracy nuts who thinks that the oil industry is suppressing all other forms of energy (see, always a little bit of truth) and preventing us from using perpetual and over unity machines to make our own power (uh, OK, now he's crazy). But all in all it was a pleasant experience and he came away knowing more.

Yeah I had this guy in his late 40s at a small independent shop explaining to me that auto makers have had the technology for really high gas mileage for years, they just won't sell it. He went on and on about some carbureted car he had and how much mpg it made.

I always get that when I show my Insight. How GM had some "100 MPG Cadillac" but the oil company wouldn't let them sell it. Doesn't matter how many times you tell them it is impossible (energy density of gasoline, air/fuel ratios, heat capacity of a fuel, engine efficiency, aerodynamics, vehicle weight, etc. etc.) they will always believe this silly urban legend. Then again, a huge amount of people believe in even more ridiculous things, so I guess there is no reason to be surprised.

Just remembered,

Had some guy telling me he owned an FB and later went on to explaining the internals of the rotary engine as "paddles that spin".... Interesting way of putting it....

This thread is fantastic. One day before SS13 while I was in Irvine:

Random guy in traffic next to me: "I LOVE YOU! AND YOUR CAR!"

Quite flattering really. I turned to him and said thank you.
