FD + 20B = project

Right i have had this car a while now and decided to go all out with it and get the good old 20B fitted. The project hasn't progressed massively so far but i'm doing this in between other jobs so i have limited time to spend on it.

Heres a couple of pics of the when it was in stock-ish 13B format:

The interior had to come out in a weight saving exercise. Still not 100% done at the moment. Sound deadening and a few other bits still to remove. But i gave it a quick coat of paint up as is.

So thats how the car was.

From here i made few changes. Change the tie rod ends for a set of JIC Magic ones. The exhaust you a Trust Ti-R. Finally the Veilside skirts and front bumper for a set of URAS ones. In doing the body work i also revised the colour scheme on the car and decided to go two - tone in red and black.

old rod ends

JIC items

Trust Ti-R

URAS body work,

Just before new paint

After the red was on- but not fully finihsed buffing.

Black

Finished result

Now the reason didn't spend loads of money on a professonal paint jod is due to the fact that the car will be on track so the paint could get damaged. And to be honest the finish isn't too bad. The Advans have also been done in black now.

Next trick was to get the 13B out, which i wil bebuild and chuck into something else!

Whilst this was i out i also removed the ABS. Ready for my Grex 330 6 pots.

New subframe for 20B and a pic of it in place

New Nitron Racing dampers. These things have such awsome build quaility and they weight next to nothing without the spring on.

And this brings me up to date. The 20B going in.

Although the engine is lined up and tight to the gear box i unfortunaly can't get it to line up with the engine mounts dur to the steering shaft getting in the way and hitting the twin tubos. I will be going for a big single on this in the near future but want to get the 20B up and running, all the electrics done etc first.

Has anyone done a 20B conversion on here using the stock cosmo twins? Left or right hand drive? Is there enough room for them to fit down that side of the FD engine bay?

Yes, my car started out as a twin turbo setup, left hand drive car. Here are a few pics, but everything fits nicely. This is with the Pettit subframe which I think is the one from Canada.

The twins have now been removed and I have a single T51 dual-bb instead. The problem with the 20B twins is they cannot make more than 400 or so WHP. Yes, Pettit stretches the truth claiming 500 HP (this is at the crank also).

Thanks for that David and nice car buy the way. I have had alook at your thread great development.

Unfortuantly after today it apperent that the stock 20B turbos wont fit even with steering mods there just isn't enough room. The over all plan was to do a Turbo charged peripheral port on it. What i'm going to is make the car a peripheral port N/A for now. Slowly build it up from stock ports to peripheral. Then once all the ancilleries are in place i'll turbo charge. I'll be using a Microtech so that will take both set ups in its stride.

I have to admit I was skeptical about the two tone paint job, but once I saw the finished product its actually very nice! Good job on the car so far!

The twins will fit in on a rhd car, you have to modify the steering shaft, rack , turbo oil and water lines and one of the intake pipes. Im running BNR highflow twins on my 20b fd.

I can see how they will fit but with the route i'll be taking with the car its far easier for me to go N/A for a few months till i have the other parts in place.

More progress, yeah i know too much time on my hands!!!

Given that i'm going N/A all the turbo gubbins is off and the 20B fits like a dream. There was an oil pump issue that i knew about before i droped the lump in the car, the one at the front of the engine which drizzles the tips to keep them lubed up.

Before:

Stripped down and cleaned out:

Also gave it a bit of a clean through on a set of Greddy pullies.

Hi mate, greetings from Oz!

Completely agree. Stock they were a shade over 300 rwhp with the twins. With a Wolf ecu I got my D series up to the 390's on a fairly accurate dyno. This was why I dumped them and went with a large single for my 20B project. For those interested, the 20B duals do not fit in the 1st gen bay without bay modifications. I have a body shop at my disposal, so it was no big, but for someone on a budget, go a single and aim for 12psi with water injection and tune for rollover at 6500rpm. Nice power delivery, good boost pickup, and an easy 500 rwhp on pump fuel.

BTW, very nice ride, and with a 20B - it's a monster.

Cheers

I'm goin to get the Peripheral porting done first. Run it as and N'A with low comp rotors. I know it wont make amazing power in that set up but i'll be adding a turbo later. Something like a New age T88H. I hav heard that Greddy are developing a new turbo call the V Spec/ Spec V so that could be an option.

moving slowly but surely on this one. I will be running the car as N/A peripheral port certainly fo next years racing. I'm looking into 9:7.1 rotors at the moment.

In light of going N/A properly for a period i decided to work on getting the car as cool as possible so i set about designing the following.

Then i put the theroy into practice. I started a mock up of the ducting ally. Through looking at the space availible i also decided to incorperate ducting for the ait filters. After removing the front bumper again i remember how much deaqd space there was. To utilize this i cut two extra holes in the front bumper to feed the air filter ducting directly.

cheers

Did you convert to a push type clutch? The clutch pictured is for an FC, not an FD pull type.

Its an OS Giken twin plate clutch so yes it is an FD clutch but it has a movement alteration kit in the bell housing.

Finshed up on the intake and re located the rad to suite. All fits nice and neat in there. The filter intake hopefully will work as desired. Also finished off the brake lines as the ABS has been removed for the track and made a platform for the ign coils. The brake bais is hidden behind the coils in an effort to get a more uncluttered look.

The stock rad is battered so a nice shiney Koyo on the way.

WOW long time since i did anything to this thread.

Still a ton of stuff to do. Started rebuilding the exahust system yesterday. Had a straight through on it with a Trust ti-R rear muffler. Super LOUD!!! never get on a track in the UK with it. It almost hurt it was so loud. Just waiting, always seem to be waiting!!, for some new stainless header flanges then i can do the manifold too.

All need to cut out the boot floor pan so i have a flat serface for the fuel tank.
Build the fuel tank out of ally.
Fuel lines and fuel system.
new brackets to move the rad forward/down
Electic water pump/fans to go on
..... oh and rebuild the engine as the rear rotor is dead and has no compression!
