Question Worth swapping alternator?

Driving past a yard today that had a 2nd generation... Forgot what amp was recommended here for upgrading... bought a 70amp...

At least I got a great deal on a Fiero electric fan today.

Is it worth replacing the stock from my GSL-SE? Will it be enough to power the fan?

thanks

That answer doesn't help me.

BTW: being new here, what does s5 mean?

The alt that you have should be fine. The S1, S2, etc. refers to the series of the car (basic design changes).

S1 '79-'80
S2 '81-'83
S3 '84-'85
S4 '86-'88
S5 '89-'91
S6 '93-'95

S1 to S3 are first generation. S4 and S5 are second gen. And S6 is third gen.

For the alts, your stock SE one is 60 amp. The 70 amp that you got must be off of an S4 Turbo model. The S5 alternators are 80 amp. The non-SE first gen alternators range between 50 and 55 amp.

Thanks for the detailed response! the alt was definately from an S4, but it didn't look turbo.

Since you and Brandon gave me the nod, I think I'll replace the alt and battery cables this weekend!

you have to use some female spade connectors for the two wire connector on the alternator, because the size of the stock plug is different.

Other than that, its a bolt on deal, might have to swap the pulley too.... doubt it though
