Want to help a fellow(female) GSL-SE owner...

I've offered to help her out for free just see another 7 running again.

I noticed this car sitting in her driveway the other day, looks rather good. It' white w/dark tinted windows and FC wheels (not my fav) Anyway, she said it has trouble starting and once it does the idle goes up and down like crazy. I'm pretty confident working on rotaries but wanted some insight from you GSL-SE (F.I.) guys for stuff to look for. I've got a haynes manual.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Let's get this car back on the road!

sounds like a simple vacuum leak. check the connections between the AFM and throttlebody for cracks in the plastic. if you don't find anything there then get yourself a can of carb cleaner or starting fluid (ether) and spray at suspect spots around the intake manifolds and rubber vacuum lines. if you find a spot that affects the idle then you found your leak.

Alrighty, after a little reading seems that I can block off pretty much the same stuff I did on my 12A. The ACV is known to cause problems like this isn't it? Can I just block it off with some sheet metal?

Do the 84/85 13b's suffer from flooding like the FC's?

they can develope injector leaks and flood just as easily, moreso as they get older. i would not suggest sheet metal as a block off plate. it deforms too easily and makes sealing pretty tricky.

i doubt flooding is the primary problem - espcially since you describe surging idle. don't start by removing parts and blocking them off. find the problem first.

The FAQ lists several articles about -SE idle and starting problems. I'd start there. And I agree with GTray. Don't just start yanking things off. Find the root cause first.

It sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere. The vacuum lines on the exh side of the engine can get brittle.

Possibly a bad TPS? (throttle position sensor) I had one of these go out on one of my 88s which had the same symptoms (surging idle but ran fine otherwise) I am pretty sure the gsl-se has a similar if not the same sensor as the s4 engines.

by the way 1stgen tn where are you located and what are you driving. I am in Jonesborough and drive a bronze 79 most of the time. My wife drives a red 85 gsl with a targa bar. Just wondering if I may have seen you around anywhere.

tmking, kick butt! I live in Greeneville. Mine is just primer gray at the moment and plenty loud with the exhaust mods. I plan to paint it white by spring '05. We've got to hook up sometime and take on a mtn. road or something. PM me your email.

Yeah, I know better than to just start replacing/cutting stuff but I want to know all the well known parts that go bad often. I will go down the list of problem causers... Starting with looking at the plugs and timing first off. She doesn't know ANYTHING about her car. poor thing.

BTW, i made my own block off plates. They look great! I work a metal fab shop so I had the right tools to cut them out and them painted them gloss black. I can powder coat too if need be. IMO, why not just go ahead and get rid of the stuff you don't need before they go bad? No emission laws in Tennesse, so why not? Not arguing with anyone here, if there IS a reason to keep the stuff, PLEASE do tell.

Thanks for all the good info guys. It's good to know when I'm going to work on a car that I have the Rx7club over my shoulders!

Oh, and for sealer I use Nissan gasket seal. For those who don't know, it's the best sealer on earth! No joke. Best reckonized by it's pumpkin orange color. Have NEVER had a problem with that stuff. Neither has my Dad for the past 30yrs working with Datsuns.
