Water seal question

I did a search here, as well as in the 2nd Gen forum. My guestion is this: How do you seat the inner and out water seals, when they seem to be larger around than the channel they are supposed to fit in? The only answer I found was to place it in the groove and crazy glue it in place. Is this a good way to seat the seals? Will the glue deteriorate the seals?

Also, when I opened up this 13B, it had a lot of sandy stuff in the water passages. I didn't know what it was at first, but then I thought about it. It had 59,000 miles on it, and the guy sold it to me for $100 cause it was leaking water into the combustion chamber and he didn't know how to fix it. The sandy stuff looks like that Stops Leak, or Bar Leak crap that people put in the radiator. How harmful can that stuff be if it gets in past the water seals? I don't see any grooves worn in the machined surfaces, and there is no flaking at all. Doesn't look like the sandy stuff did any damage but I thought I would ask. The previous owner said that as soon as it started making white smoke he knew it was burning coolant and he stopped driving the car.

Any info is appreciated

you using the correct seals?

on my 12A the seals fit right in. I doped the snot out of 'em with Hylomar, but I didn't have to fudge them it or anything.

The seals that came out are in 1 piece, and they seem to big to go back in (not that I'm trying to use them again) I was guessing they didn't stretch, so I was assuming that the new ones would be the same size. Plus someone else had asked the same question in another forum so it got me thinking. I guess I'm jumping the gun, cause the ones I ordered haven't showed up yet.

They might have swollen with age/exposure to chemicals.

Also, they WILL stretch when you remove them, even if they stay in one piece.
