V-8 conversion why would you wanna do that? Pistons and Rex's don't mix well kinda of like....like....a "**** taco" drink (half a shot of Tequila mixed with a half shot of Jagermeister) Worms and black licorice don't mix?!?! Blaaaahhh....

I just cant take the power thats not there with the 12a. I'm seriously considering doing a 13bt t2 swap but why?

You can get way more horsepower from a piston engine for cheaper plus their twice as reliable.

But yes, I agree the car would not be the same without the rotary in it.

You're handling and braking will go out the window as a result, though. You can go with SS lines and bigger brakes to recover the stopping power, but there's nothing you can do short of a serious set-back of the engine (which means you'd have to cut the firewall to get clearance for the bellhousing...) to recover the handling because of the additional 200 lbs you'd be adding to the front with that blasphemous conversion...

Again...isn't there another Forum or website y'all can go to for these kinds of atrocities?! This is a rotary Forum, for Pete's sake!!

Why not throw a supercharged Miata engine in there instead of a Honduh banger, Jeff? Keep it kinda factory despite the butchery.

While rotaries take to turbochargers best, there are some fantastic supercharger kits for the Miata 4 that free up very, very significant horsepower. I won't quote numbers as I've not done it myself but I know one fellah who convincingly claims a huge boost (no pun intended) to performance - and he's one of those sceptics who usually shoots holes in any mod ideas.

Well recent updates are I ditched the POS 2nd gen oil cooler and went with an aftermarket racing oil cooler, some AN steel braided lines, a NOS fuel pump, and some misc other goodies. I will unveil it soon with a MP3 or a MPEG

You are so ignorant its sad sometimes. How many times do people have to tell you the same things over and over again? First off, a 302 with aluminum intake/heads is hardly heavier than a 12A. My car brakes no-worse than it did before and handles just like it did with the rotary in it. The firewall doesnt need to be cut at all, I don't know where you got this from?? Whats the reason you keep bringing up bad things about piston driven RX-7's when you've never owned one and have been disproved many times?

And yes the firewall has to be cut... so that the balance of the car isnt fucked up way too much... He got it from thinkin.... maybe you should try it... 'Pegger, you're probably making the innocent mistake of calculating the weight of a bare 302 (even with aluminum heads) against the weight of a 12A with all accessories attached.

I worked on plenty of Detroit Iron engines from Allison Diesels to Chevy V-8s (Some at the Minto Armouries there in the 'Peg just before we started sandbagging in '97). The blocks alone are quite a heft.

Then you have to consider the deeper oil pan required, which mounts the engine higher in the car. Sure it will fit under the hood but you're transferring hundreds of pounds a few inches higher in the frame and affecting the center of mass (the very reason SUVs roll more in corners than low slung cars)

Then there's the far larger and heavier Ford Automatic tranny that bolts to the engine, again increasing the weight substantially.

As to real-world performance, there's a guy here in Saskatoon with a 302 in his car and he has to slow to 20kph to corner.

I can appreciate that yours seems to handle as well as stock, but the majority of people doing these swaps must be doing something different than you did (not uncommon on custom work) because they DO suffer the handling performance drops that Mar3 is mentioning.

Most advice given on here is based on generalities. There are always exceptions, but in general most V8 swaps into ReXes carry weight and handling penalties.

Surprisingly, not as much as you would think. The rotary engine, support equipment, and exhaust systems are heavier than they look. Typical weight gain for a 1st gen car is only 75-125 lbs.
If that guy isn't bs-ing then I cant see to bad of a performance drop.

I'll tell you right now, that looks 50 times better than my engine bay as it sits.

Do you think its possible with some help to like fabricate your own mounts and everything? I just cant seem to justify spending 5 times as much as my car costed just to take the rotary outta it.

Alter the rear suspension for more anti-squat. Then, after the initial launch, provided your tires are sticky enough and you haven't blown any driveline bits out (to be expected if you'd foolish enough to try using a T5), you should have 100% weight transfer (front tires off of ground)
