The shifter will be too far back by a couple of inches and the bell housing probably doesn't bolt up but who knows. Then theres the drive shaft length to consider as well as the mounting of the tranny in the tunnel.

Its not a bolt and go proposition. I've seen folks swap trannys but unless its SA to SA its never a bolt in. Now S2 and S3 swap as well as S4 I think. Not sure about an FD one.

biggest issue i see is if the 79 clutch setup will work in the fd tranny or have to use the fd setup. then there's the balance between the fd flywheel and front counterweight.

Most definitely not a bolt in,as noted above-clutch setup, counterweight, flywheel and the fact the release lever/slave cylinder is a pull not push type.

First question is why are you asking? Is something wrong with your transmission?

FC is your best bet. If I'm being picky, S4 FC transmission. An FC NA transmission would be the easiest since it could use the same starter and flywheel already on your engine I believe, bolt and go.

TII's run a larger diameter flywheel and have different starters, so you'd need to swap your flywheel and clutch setup out to a TII lightweight flywheel with a rear counterweight matching your engine internals.

Either way you'll have to modify the shifter rod in order to fit in the transmission tunnel properly.
