steering box removal ??'s

Okay, so I've got the steering linkage from the wheels disconnected from the main steering bar thats connected to the steering box arm...problem is no matter how hard I beat, pound, pull the steering gear box arm won't come out of the linkage that connects the left and right together.

Are you saying you cannot break loose the center link from the pitman arn, or the pitman arm from the steering sector? I gather you are changing/removing the steering sector. Which parts do you need to save, which ones don't?

We need pictures. If you are refeering to the pitman arm, It does not come off by pounding.

You need a special wedge shaped metal fork, you hammer it between them and it pops apart. You could find one at a Sears or most auto parts stores. Many even have loaners. They are known as Pickle-forks or tie-rod remover forks.

Once you see one how it works will be common sence.

okay lets see if I can describe this better. The steering box has an arm (pitman arm?) that attaches to the center section. It is this center section that attaches to the tie rods. I got the tie rod disconnected from the center section, it is the steering box pitman arm that I cannot break loose. I think I will need that puller/fork...I've seen them before, I'll see about getting one tomorrow, I'm trying to devise something to work though b/f doing that.

Does that make more sense, I'll get pics in the morning.

You need a puller to remove the arm.

this is so fun. I guess Im lucky that we have lots of RX-7's in our junkyard. Take them apart, no need to clean up and break whatever I dont need. I have a nickname for local junkyard. "STRESS RELIEVER"

So are you taking the pitman arm off of the sector, or trying to seperate the pitman from the center link? If the replacement sector has the pitman, leave it alone. If it's the center link, soak overnight with P B Blaster, use a pickle fork. If it's still stubborn, heat it up.

Steering box has the pitman arm at the bottom of it that connects to the center sector that runs from left side to right side and ties into the tie rods.

Replacement steering box has a pitman arm on it, so i just need to get it off the center sector so i can drop the new one in. GAH, damn 22 year old cars.

after I get done with you, you will be using www.wegoslow.com
And besides I thought you had to use your good hand to hold yourself upright in the walker so you don't fall and break your hip!

Too late, I sold the walker to buy some more stock in Geritol.
