sr20 in a 82 FB

I have just started my new turbo project
I have a 82 that I have owned for 13 yrs and last summer the motor blew so I decided to do a sr swap.
so far I have the car completely gutted and rear end is getting replaced with a ford 8.8,10point cage w/full interior. The motor is getting eagle rods and JE pistions the turbo is a tO4s good for 550hp
custom equal length manifold JWT ecu w/ford lightning maf and 1000cc injectors.
The only thing that I am questioning is the braking system now w/ the 8.8diff my rear disks are bigger than the front one's
who makes a good conversion

The stock rear disk are bigger than the fronts. What matter is total swept are, how much pad contacts the disk. If that is greater just get a valve to adjust brake bias and you should be ok. If you must upgrade the fronts follow some of the FC front swaps going on, and mazspeed has a write up on how to do just the FC front brakes. Keep us (me) updated with the swap.

How are you going to run the exhaust? I see the SR places the exhaust on the drivers side.

It shouldn't be too much of a problem since the exhaust is on the driver's side on all the rx-7s in Japan. Actually I remember that there was a problem with alot of fd's crashing because of this but thats just what the guys that run the junkyards used to tell me.

What the hell are you talking about? lol

The body is made so the exhaust can run on the passenger side (right hand side here in the states). The exhaust is run on the right hand side on all 7's, doesn't matter what side the steering wheel is on.

I'm using an 8.8" rear end with 10.5" vented disks on an '81 FB. To balance things up, the front spindles have been swapped for '85 model examples (thicker and shorter) and Wilwood 310mm disks with 4-pot calipers will be installed. I'm going to be using a 300ZX brake master cylinder on the factory pedal box with an aftermarket brake bias controller.

The entire front brake conversion shouldn't set you back more than US$2000, at least that's about what it's going to cost me.

I will be making all the exhaust, when I get to that point I will find out. I think that it is going to be one of the easy parts of my project since every part of this swap is custom made. To making the motor sit in the right location I had to cut the cross member out and make a new. all three motor mounts are custom. If I had to pay a company to make everything I need I would never be able to afford this swap.

thanks I will start looking for the parts will I need to change the lower supension arm also or will the spindle bolt in.,

What type of supension did you use on the 8.8 ladderbar or four link?
I am using minny tubs so my 10"slicks fit inside the stock fenders, the problem that is I have to cut out the stock four link.

thats a pretty badass project you have going on here. i thought this thread was just going to be about the idea.

i saw a guy up at summit point, west va, with one in a fc. it was built for drifting, and it was a pretty hardcore car. i cant imagine 500hp in a fb, especially with all that torque.

what are you doing for an intercooler?

what about cooling system?

and does the valve cover clear the hood? im guessing it doesnt. the guy with the fc had a turbo2 hood on it, and cut all the bracing out of it. you could see the redtop peaking out through the scoop which was pretty cool.

good luck man, and keep up posted.

I have not decided on a intercooler yet because my FD has a water to air set-up I think that I might put it on this in sted and go back to a smic on the FD
The cooling system might be the stock FB radiator because it is so big and mine is in great shape. I am going to have it tested before I use it. My friend has a stock sr radiator on a 500hp sentra and it has no problems cooling the motor.
I made sure that the motor cleared the stock hood that is why I had to cut the cross member out and make a new one

The spindles are a direct bolt-in, and absolutely necessary.

I'm using the factory four-link, I've just rewelded the watts linkage leverage point because it didn't line up exactly with the original location. If I get it on the track and it's too twitchy, I'll use the panhard rod out of the Ford Falcon the live axle was sourced from.

As the track on the car isn't that wide, I'll get the guards rolled slightly rather than cut tubs into the inner guards. If I can get 255/30/16 tyres under there somehow I'll be happy

[Looks around cautiously for flamers....]

Way cool man,!!! I don't know anything about those engines, but that sounds like it should get-a-move-on. Nice job.
Later,
Bill
