should i get it or ditch it

i found an 85 RX7 with a 12a in it.

im a complete nub as far as the inner workings of the car go but it seems alright except that there is a thick layer of oily crude at the bottom of the engine and the current owner says the Cat Converter started smoking in the past week, but it didnt do this during my test drive today. Any ideas where all the oily goo is coming from or why the cat is smoking??

stating the price would also help in the desicion following some pictures .. also what trim level is it?

depending on if it is coming from the front of the engine or rear will help determine what is causing the buildup of residue. are there any visible oil leaks? does the car have an air pump? let us know what you find.

Welcome to the forum and the Darkside.

As dj, stated, post pics/more details of the car and the leak. Leak may be coming from the oil pan itself, or, since you mentioned the cat, it may be coming from the mop or one of the mop lines if the leak is limited to the right hand side of the engine bay. Best way to chase the leak down is to degrease/powerwash the entire engine and bay, the start looking for fresh oil. The other most common source is on the top of the engine by the front 12A logo on the housing, also know as the leak of death, even thoughit isn't terminal, most of the time.

In my sig line is a link to the online FSMs, carb manual and other rotary related reading. DL whatever you need.

Post as much info, along with pics, that you can, we'll keep you straight and pointed in the right direction.

the price on the car is 3500, and i have no way of power washing it down to find the leak as it is not my car and will not be my car if this is a crit prob being as i dont have the $$ to rebuild the engine atm.

The oil was down at the bottom edge of the engine where i think the engine is mounted im not sure though but thats where it was and there was quite alot of it being as its all around front and back of the engine but the oil is only in the bottom, but there wasnt any drip lines that would indicate where it came from. my roomate thinks it might be coming through the seals thats connect the rotor housings together <.< what ever those are called but i don know, and the smokin cat has me baffled

Sorry, great looking car, but unless it's totally pristine inside and mechanically along with being 100% totally rust free, the price is twice what it's worth. Need more details on the car, mileage maininance records, # of owners, which model, S, GS, GSL. It's not a GSL as it has no sunroof, therefore it has doesn't have an lsd or rear disc brakes. The GS model has a badge on the left rear, this one doen't, so I would have to say it's an S model, which is the bottom of the model line.

If it was a GSL, not a single flaw anywhere, cosmetically or mechanically, it would be worth no more the 2k, if the mileage was under 50k.

If you really want a decent 1st gen, keep looking, the seller has priced this one way out of market value.
