Adding aftermarket gas gauge - race car

Trying to ditch the dash cluster but I need the gas gauge for endurance racing. Has anyone tried clipping the wires off the back of the stock cluster and hooking them up to the new aftermarket gauge? I know that the gauges use ohms to read if the tank is full or not so I assume that the new gauge will have to be reading close to the same ohms?

Any buddy have have any luck with certain brands? Do I need to get a sender and pair it with the new gauge? I have heard the adj ones cause a lot of head acs.

You could do that, just measure what the Ohms reading is at full and empty and get a gauge thats within that range

If you can't find one that meets the current ohm reading you can always increase the ohms by adding the needed resistor in series or decrease the resistance by adding resistor in parallel. You could make almost any aftermarket gauge work by doing this.
