SHould i be concerned or is it supposed to do this?

was on the highway and passing someone so i was in 3rd at about 6500RPM

due to traffic i lifted off a little to duck in behind a car when the back just started spewing smoke,

i shifted to 4th and it went away.

Curious i did it two more times if i let off and let the enginebrake for more than a couple second it smokes

only in third and on ly near the redline....

ideas?

I have no exp with 12A cars. Do you have emissions stuff because maybe it's that. But it's odd if it only works in 3rd gear...

The oil O rings are old and when you let off the gas pedal, the vacuum pulls a little oil past the oil seals and it burns with the regular air fuel mixture.

It just means the engine is tired. Nothing to worry about unless it suddenly started blowing tons of smoke from an otherwise never-smoker. Did it ever blow a puff of smoke on start-up?

Whats his name had the same thread (the one with the video who is going into the Air Force) that just blew up on him, same thing sounds like. Jeff is correct though, it will just get worse.

Who knows.

Mine does the same thing. Only after a run-up through the first three gears followed by HIGH manifold vacuum (snap throttle shut at 7500rpm and coast down) Never smokes under any other conditions (like trying it just in 1st gear) which leads me to believe that it's temperature sensitive, only happens when the oil gets hot, which will happen after running full throttle for a quarter minute or so. Do you have a '83-85 with the beehive oil "cooler"?

sort of no

mines an 82

but the engine is an 83/85 that has had the beehive removed and the oilcooler slung under the rad put in its place

but it does sound like the same problem

Yep. Just helps to add to my notion that the oil heater doesn't just kill the dowel pin O-rings, it also kills the oil control O-rings on the rotors.

Basically, drive it until the smoke bothers you. Mine's only got 160k on it and it'll probably run until 250-300, maybe longer if I ever get the OMP working again But it won't... there is a new Evil Engine brewing in my secret underground lair....

i had a car that did that. at 110, you could lift the throttle and stomp the gas and fill 4 lanes with blue smoke. i think it depends on how hard you drive and if you keep it maintained with oil that determines how long it will last. i ran very low on oil four or five times and in a pinch, used 5W30 oil(damn stupid me). it went on like this for about three or so months before she gave up the ghosts. i drove it hard and was an idiot. i treated it like a dog and looking back on it, i wish i knew then what i know now. i am a zillion times smarter now. but that was when i was 17.
