Replacement A/C Condenser

Back again, bought a replacement a/c condenser for my SE,paid more than i wanted to but was assured it was exact replacement for oe "drop in". Opened the box and it's anything but, called company, spoke with owner who said it was correct unit for my car. Took pics of his and mine,he told me mine was aftermarket. I told him i was certain mine was oe,directed him to ebay where a used one was being sold with a perfect picture of it-exactly like mine.He said it doesn't look anything like the one he sells.....told him it's the only one kind i've ever seen for 81-85 RX7. Have called him back several times-never returns my calls...you see where this is going. Pinning him down he gives me two options, prepaid shipping label to return his condenser for a refund or ship him mine so he can rebuild mine. Doubtful will do that in looking at the quality of what was sent to me and the fact the core in the new condenser sent to me is 3 inches less wide than what came in the car. What have others' experiences been in obtaining a"quality" replacement condenser for your FB? Any thoughts, recommendations, referrals would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I think you are both right. I think there was always an option for factory AC or port installed AC
even on GSL-SEs. If you look at some catalogs they require you to specify whether it is factory
or port installed. He may be sending you the factory OEM one but yours may have been installed
in the port here in the US of A and may be different from OEM. That could be the difference.

Anyone know for sure? I know this is the case for SAs and early FBs.

I may have what you need used, I have a couple of systems from 84/85 GSLs in the shed. If you want to go used please send me some good pictures of what you need and I'll see if I can match it up.

Thanks
Ray

It has been my understanding for years that SEs came here from factory with a/c.I, installed a/c in RXs,323s,626s,but never an SE. Never saw one without. Cars going to Canada & Europe didn't get a/c standard, was optional, cars bound for Europe didnt even get the whole "SE"-no 13B engine. Ray,Thanks for the condenser offer, might take you up on it. Computer in for repairs..again. When i get it back fixed, hopefully,i can send you a pic. Working off a tablet when posting is slightly aggravating. Meantime continuing search for a new replacement... So many damn delays, should have been in paint 2 months ago.

Scroll down 10 pics. New FB condenser by Obsolete Air,not where i got mine from but exact new condenser i now have. OE(like what's in my car) has lower vertical fitting & mountings are exact same as mine. New condenser shown is same as what was shipped to me. Lower fitting is horizontal, core is narrower & mounts are not even close to oe. Hope this helps, also hope didn't break any rules by describing the items from *bay.

Here's the one I found with your google suggestion:

I'm pretty sure it's the same as the on I have in my 84 GSL parts car, but hard to tell for sure from just one pic on that ebay ad.

Here are some pictures of the one I have, it looks like it's in good shape, fins are mostly straight and clean, no obvious corrosion issues or other damage.

If interested, I will pull the unit, clean it up, pressure test it and take some more pictures. I would suggest $20 plus shipping as a price, but anything more than the aluminum recycle would work for me. Please let me know, I could pull it this weekend or whenever.

That's great! The pics of the one in the car look exactly like what i have, looks in pretty good shape, definitely interested. How would you pressure test it? If good, don't worry about cleaning it up,i'd happily do that. Looks like that car had p/steering..

Yep it was PS, AC, sunroof, leather interior, all that GSL stuff.

To pressure test I was just going to put a silicone plug in one end, a cork with a hole in it in the other and use the blow attachment on my compressor to put some pressure on it with the coils under water, look for bubbles. I'd be surprised if it has a problem though, it looks to be in pretty good shape.

I'll pull it later today and get a few more pics once it's out.

Sorry for the delay, some rain and I wanted to let the blaster do its work to avoid damaging any connections.

Passed the low pressure pressure test, here are some pictures:

Didn't matter how long it took you, very glad you had one and it is the correct one. Looks to be in good condition and sounds encouraging that it passed your pressure test. My search for a used one has turned up zip, spent better part of morning tramping around two salvage yards that said they had a couple first gens, Was great to come home and see your post. if you could Pm me what you want for it,ill get right back to you. Thank you.

I'll find a box and get a shipping quote, good to know it won't be melted down for recycle.

Addendum - ALL GSL-SE had air conditioning, period. That is part of why the listed weight is so much higher than 12A cars, 12A cars had port- or dealer-installed A/C while GSL-SEs got it in Hiroshima, so they weighed more as-produced.

It was done this way to minimize lead times on "special order" cars, they would make the cars with the minimum of differences, send them over on the slow boat, and any options were added at the port or dealership level.
